Same thing going north once you're past, say, Eglinton. North of Lawrence, forget about it.

Great great deal on a set of road wheels; I have these on my Roubaix and they are very nice and $70 is a really low price.

I_bRAD 11-21-07 07:50 PM

Phil- there's Weston too. If you're not in a hurry you could take the humber trail as far as Steeles and then go from there. Anything north of the 401 pretty much sucks by bike in my experience.

Lordfoo: how'd you get a valid product key?

P.S Dura-ace high flange track hub with lockring + track nuts = 315.8g.

Alright, I picked up an older Miele frame from a shop by Christie and Dupont. The frame has a bit of rust around the headtube and BB shell, but for $50, it was a good deal. I need to know how I should proceed with removing the rust - the guy at the shop said 120 sand paper with a steel wool brush - but I thought I'd ask you guys. After removing the rust, priming and painting, the next move is to get a headset and fork. Operator, I'm looking at Urbane to find a 1" threadless headset and 1" fork.

I_bRAD 11-21-07 08:16 PM

which one is it? lookmanohands isn't up anymore as far as I can tell.

Why not just go threaded? It'll be a lot cheaper, and easier to find a fork.

Any big drawbacks to threaded? Urbane seems to have some 1" cromo forks. I would have taken the fork that was on the Miele, but the stem was cut and stuck in the steerer tube for some reason. Didn't want to put the guy through any trouble for $50. The headset was completely shot, and had to be removed.

Ditto, it just got tossed out there and I spent the next 30 seconds picking my jaw off the floor.

Was this some sort of lifetime achievement award for various bike-related adventures or ... ?

I can't think of any drawbacks to threaded. You could grab a fork from George for way less than a new one would cost.

Ballpark ~ $100 total for headset + fork. If you're not deadset on going this route, you can stick with the threaded fork (unless your bike didn't come with one) and grab a new headset. We gots Tange $10-$20 or more expensive shimano cartridges up to 105 level in stock.

If you have the original fork you may or may not have enough threading on the fork to accomadate the newer cartridge headsets. Bring in frame/fork unless you can write up all the measurements.

cavit8 11-21-07 08:35 PM

Since you're in vendor mode, do you have any 24" and 20" wheels that are cheap. For both, I'd need a rim and a complete front wheel. 24"s should be extra cheap, not so worried about the 20" as I'll pay more for a decent rim (not $80 for a rim, though).

tuz 11-21-07 08:37 PM

100$ is not cheap. If you have time take the old fork and put one end in ammonia. It should dissolve the aluminum oxide and free the stuck stem.

You mean George at Parts Unknown? I couldn't find that place to save my life! I went up Augusta tonight, around 5:15PM and just couldn't spot the place.

I_bRAD 11-21-07 08:43 PM

You can't spot it. Go to Baldwin and Augusta and stand by the coffee shop on the NE corner. Look across Augusta to the west. Note the gate. Then go through the gate.

I'm still sorta sitting here blinking at my screen.

No drawbacks to threaded vs threadless. You lose the one tool adjustment (allen key) for threadless and the supposedly stiffer and lighter. But for a beater these differences are negligible.

Regarding the removal: http://yarchive.net/bike/frozen_stem_remove.html

Here is the relevant quote:

Aluminum oxide formed is porous and hard and takes up
about twice the volume of the metal from which it is made. This is a
press fit with molecular interlocking that cannot be separated by
force and cannot be dissolved by chemical action in any reasonable
time without immersion in a hot bath. Even that is doubtful because
the area of attack is small and depth great.

The practical way for removing such corroded parts is to saw them off
and bore them out, first with a drill if wall thickness is too great
(bar stem), and then with a Dremel tool.

Ignore this if the fork is already seperated from the frame. I wouldn't really bother trying to free the stem from the fork. Parts unknown that for a cheap replacement.

I know we have 24"/20" in stock, but i'm not sure what the pricing is off the top of my head. Give urbane a call tomorrow.

I'll likely go with this route, but might look into "Places Unfindable" first. You guys don't have any older Shimano 600-series parts anymore, do you?
