How much and where? I'd love to try one of those out and if it can actually get a bike clean that'd be a vast improvement to my current "old cat litter container/bucket" system ...

Easy way to measure chain death: Use an imperial ruler. Line up the 0 mark with the center of a pin. The center of another pin should line up at the 12" mark. If it's off by more than 1/16" of an inch, it's time for a new chain.

I got it at Cdn Tire in the garden section. It's a 2ga/9L one that I think was around $30 with a plastic resevoir and a brass uhh.. 'wand'. I haven't used it yet, but I'm guessing it's not going to be blasting mud off or anything. It'll still require some soap + sponge/brush action. But at least it'll be easier to soak/rinse things.

Speaking of which, next time I need supplies I think I'm just going to pick up the Pedros Super Pit Kit since everything in there (including the bucket it comes in) would come in handy. Anyone ever see those in stock locally?

Just ran into the EuroTrashRoadie guy in my office-building on his way out for a ride to Mississauga. Wish I could do the same.

His bike was totally Operator-approved as well. No words! Well, okay, there were words on his Ksyrium ES wheelset, but the high-end looking carbon frame was totally debadged. I said "Whatcha ridin' there?" His response? "I didn't like the brand so I removed everything. I don't like the idea of advertising a company I don't like." Good enough. I couldn't ID it, but it was just clear-coated carbon... no give-away tube shapes/geometry.

In some distant memory of mine I recall someone saying that Shimano 105 9-speed brifters would also work with an 8-speed cassette. Is this correct or am I mis-remembering something else?

Don't think so... Cassette spacing is different. Perhaps with one of those older DA derailleurs which had a different actuation ratio?

Edit: ok 8sp spacing = 4.8 mm vs 4.34 for 9sp. Actuation ratio of shimano derailleur is 1.67:1 and old DA is 1.8:1 (from interwebs).
Thus 9sp brifters pulls 4.34/1.67=2.6mm of cable, and with a old DA it moves 2.6*1.8=4.68mm off by .12mm of the 8sp spacing... Might work!

edit2: I remember seeing something on Sheldon in how you can bolt the cable differently to the derailleur to make old DA work with recent stuff. Perhaps that's the trick in your case?

Love the MEC Rapides -- I think those are the 8 panel ones.

Yes, you are right, it is on Sheldon's site and I would just have to alternate the way the cable is attached to the rear derailleur. Neato, thanks, here is the link if anyone else is interested:

i like the sickle/prana climbing shants actually any of them kick ass... then for long rides i like the non-mec brand lycra short (i found the stitching didnt bother me, where as the mec ones make me want to *bad analogy that will bring the wrath of the mods*)...which fit well under the climbing shants

[Edit] and you need to buy a stinger bar (i suggest the peanutbutter one)... they get me through the weekends when i work (there... at mec...)

Not exactly MEC shorts, per se, but I really like the Castelli bibshorts I bought there. The only issue I had with them is when I wore them without my usually DeFeet Un-D-Shurt baselayer the straps started to uhh.. chafe a couple of sensitive areas. The actual shorts/chamois are superbe though, and they're available as regular shorts, bib-shorts and bib-knickers. IIRC, Keith really digs the Castelli stuff, too. The Italians know how to make nice stuff! (Giordana team kit == heaven)

edit: yeah, and if you're looking for baggy shants, I'm with Stuart. Climbing knickers are the bomb. Although one pair of mine is the perfect length/bagginess to occasionally snag on my watter bottle when I'm riding offroad and using some 'body-english'.

I'm a big fan of Descante shorts. I don't have any bibs, but almost all my shorts are Descante and they are my favourite shorts. A little bit bulkier chamois, but I find it more comfortable on longer rides.

I'm likin' the Castelli stuff as well .... I want all their jerseys too, but after reading the reviews I think I might get more bang for buck with two pairs of MECs. I NEED new riding shorts.

for whatever reason i've pretty much stopped wearing cycling shorts altogether; with the brooks saddle i don't feel like i need the padding. for something completely different, try a pair of the MEC seamless underwear with a breathable pair of shorts. it keeps everything nice and aired-out. niiiiiice and aired-out. other than that i'm with wes on the italian-made cycling garb. probably the best value if you don't want to spring for assos.

Breathable shorts eh? Sounds like a good idea... I need to invest in some newer clothing this season at some point. I've got my rain outfit finished except booties, which is easy. Now I need a decent summer deal, shorts/jersey ideas have even got me thinking of shaving the legs! I've not had any real discomfort problems - other than the odd "adjustment" issue that happens when I get out of the saddle - I'd really like more breathable/airable clothing, as I sweat/heat up like no tomorrow.

Oh yeah pyze, you were totally right on those Tektro stock pads - one day/night in the rain on Saturday and they're just fried - Koolstops here I come!

Yeah, I mostly just wear the form fitting stuff when it's either really hot out, I plan on riding really hard or I'm racing. I don't like having droopy stuff on me if I'm all schweaty, and when I'm racing it's nice to reduce the likely hood of anything getting snagged (especially in 'cross when getting on/off the bike). A lot of the time when I ride in the Don I'm just wearing regular shants/whatever. And I never get all gussied up just for commuting/etc. Of course, my commute is <3.5km, so that would be kind of silly.

My Swobo knickers came with a pair of padded liner shorts that are pretty comfy and very airy as well, but obviously need to be worn under other clothing. Speaking of Swobo... the jersey I have from them is the bomb. I might order another at some point.. maybe a long-sleeve.
