Would you believe I took my bike into Urbane to get the right size tool for my chain bolts and even they couldn't find a tool that would fit? They had to drill the friggin bolts out, what kind of crazy sized bolts are MASI including with their bikes???

EDIT: But my san marco regal came in so all is good in bike land!

I_bRAD 04-23-09 12:08 PM

Hey Will, are you at the same place as last year?

TRaffic Jammer 04-23-09 12:10 PM

Drilled because of no tool? Sure they weren't just in there? They drilled a couple of mine out too, the ones acting like tambourine cymbals, couldn't tighten couldn't loosen. Got proper SS stack bolts, much nicer. I noticed the bolts on my FSA crank are star-like/tourque? They will require a new tool.

elTwitcho 04-23-09 12:20 PM

Yeah it was the strangest thing. I got them loosened with an allen key but then the backing would just spin freely so I needed a tool to hold the backing in place while I unscrewed the nut. I picked up a park tool chainring tool for that and neither end would fit properly. At the shop they tried a couple tools and said they'd just have to drill it. It's odd because the bolts were stock and Urbane assembled the bike, so they certainly weren't the wrong bolt size...

krusty 04-23-09 03:35 PM

I have 3 different chainring bolt tools, and not one of them works on any chainring bolts I have currently, or have ever owned. I don't know why they still sell the darned things.

TRaffic Jammer 04-23-09 03:42 PM

3 tools that have NEVER fit your bolts? You know that begs the question why you have those tools? Wishful thinking purchases?

krusty 04-23-09 03:49 PM

I can open beer with them.

TRaffic Jammer 04-23-09 03:59 PM

Well then it's all good then nothing extraneous here move along.

We don't change out the bolts on stock bikes unless they're a problem (AL c-ring bolts *ahem*). I manage all the assemblies, thanks for the heads up on those no tool will work bolts.

TRaffic Jammer 04-23-09 05:24 PM

two REALLY strong magnets and twist....EPIC FAIL on alum bolts... ok i'm getting tired.

I always forget who works at what shop, I have probably bumped into so many of you guys working in shops from this thread with all my stupid questions....

No worries. I recall you saying when I picked up my bike that you were the one that actually did the assembly. The guy who fixed me up didn't charge anything for the labor so I've gotta swing by tomorrow after work and drop some money into the tip jar (was paying debit and had 0 dollars cash on me).

Also had a chance to look into getting some wheels built up. The guy quoted me around 350ish to build up a set of DA28s to formula (fixed/fixed rear) and then pointed out they've got sets of Deep Vs for 300. Probably still would prefer the Alex rims over the Veeps so if anyone just happens to be building a set of DA28s with a fixed/fixed rear towards the end of the summer to offer as a pre-built someone would probably pick them up ;)

does anybody know where i can find listings of goings-on for bike month in may?? I keep seeing ads for it in now and eye... but no listings of events...

And is mass going on friday??

elTwitcho 04-23-09 09:42 PM

I would imagine CM is going on tomorrow. If not I'll also be confused and standing around at Bloor and Spadina going "what happened?"...

Weather is gonna be perfect for it. Don't really see it as an "against cars" thing like some people so much as a good excuse to take a leisurely ride on the bike without having to worry about getting smoked by a car for once, so I'm excited for it.

krusty 04-23-09 09:52 PM

I've never done CM before, but I might tomorrow, if only to meet a few people from here. If I show, I'll be on my pale green Wilier track bike.

I guess drunk & naked is less than socially acceptable?

elTwitcho 04-23-09 09:55 PM

Orange MASI (probably still going to be filthy since the only time I have to clean it would be right now and.... yeah I'll be on the Orange MASI with dirt camoflage pattern) with cork drop bars.

Anyone know a store that sells Kona Lisa road bikes? My roommate (Lisa) is interested and they seem like relatively good bikes for the price. Any other thoughts on sub $1500 road bikes (with gears) for a female?

jet sanchEz 04-24-09 07:56 AM

Sweet Pete's sells a wide range of Konas; I like that shop too, they seem pretty chill'd there.

Krusty, thanks for all the help in my road thread. I checked out the link you provided and I think that this Pinarello probably isn't as old as '97, so thanks. I was a little apprehensive about even looking at the bike because the seller is in North Bay and offered to drive all the way down here so I would have felt really bad if the bike wasn't for me but he just told me that he drives into Toronto on a weekly basis so now I will definitely check it out...

krusty 04-24-09 08:45 AM

No problem. I would probably have driven to North Bay myself for that bike if the price was right and it was my size.

I saw one of these tonight with the whole bottom bracket shell snapped off:

So I went to Sweet Pete's today to help my roommate pick a bike. She liked the Kona Lisa, and they were a distributor so we went there. I can't remember the guy who was working but I've never been treated so badly. We walked in and said we were interested in the Lisa RD, and did they have one? No, but we were told that Kona makes crappy road bikes. So we were shown a Giant which we were told was much better (same price). The Lisa has Ultegra/105 this bike had Tiagra/Sora components. So I bring this up, and the guy says "well this bike has a better geometry".

Obviously, geometry is based upon each riders body. So I don't know how one bike necessarily has a 'better geometry". So I say "can you order in the Lisa? What's the lead time?" and was told "they don't make that bike anymore". I handed over the print out showing the 2009 Lisa RD, and he walked away (not to go check stock, just walked away).

I am not saying Sweet Petes is a bad store, but holy crap I was shocked at that. I've worked retail and sometimes it sucks. But when a customer comes in with a specific request, and you sell that bike, it's hard to imagine an easier sale. Needless to say, she decided she won't be buying anything at that store.

exhibitx 04-25-09 07:59 PM

man that sucks

maybe cycle solutions?
