this past week sunday was pretty intense, but not cuz of the weather.... measly 9 degrees in the morning

however:
some hotshot decides to cut thru the esso station at steeles and yonge, and clips the front wheel of another rider as he veers right. Poor carbon cervelo endo's and the rider goes over the bars at about 15km/h.. at least it was slow, and the rider continued.

at hwy 7 right inbetween bathurst and the langstaff exit, the pack speeds off from the lights. I have trouble clipping in from these booties that have a band at the very front of the shimano SPDSL cleat..

So im a good 15 meters from the pack and im half pedalling and half clipping in my left foot when I just see one rider elevate over the rest of them and the pack just SPLIT, ppl slammed on their brakes, and noises of ppl saying "woah" and/or "sh~t" around them. Unfortunately, the mess was right in the center of things. dude cuts off lady and caught some flack from another rider he knows. Lady was TOAST, wrist/arm/hip/knee were scraped up. The bike basically cartwheeled with the rider clipped in.
I stopped to help out, asked if they wanted me to call an ambulance and carried her TIME carbon bike with now a twisted handlebars + busted cyclo computer off to the side of the road, just west of the shell station.
They said they were alright and told us to just go on. There were about 4 of us trying to assess if we could help without adding any more to the situation..

We continued, but....... I hope this isn't what is waiting for the summer..

This is kind of why I want to avoid the donut ride. These are likely the same superstars that crash in the Ride for Heart...

Does anyone know where to get affordable stuff from Chrome in this city? I'm looking at getting a pair of their cycling man-pris, so I strolled into Duke's on my lunch yesterday. Those buggers want something like, $250 for a pair... of motherfµcking pants... Online is $160 US, but c'mon! I'll just start rockin' Daisy Duke's.

the two guys that caused the accidents were both:

wearing team kits, from toronto local clubs (different clubs per rider)

and were both not wearing helmets...

I recall a thread in the roadie forum about how crazy-insane the crashes are in the larger cat 4 and 5 races. $5000 bikes snapped in half, etc. I think I would suck in a pace-line too but I would sit at the back, away from people like me but who don't know they suck ;)

I think the history of the donut ride shows how sketchy it is. Probably less so in the spring/fall as numbers are lower, but I can imagine how many crashes there are in the summer. From what I've read and heard it has a long history of crashes, people acting like idiots, etc and that actually seems to appeal to a lot of the riders. I think some people go into it not expecting the sketchiness and that's where a lot of the backlash comes in.

what was surprising is that that Mother's Day ride had one of the smallest turn outs ever...

the only one smaller was the day before in tornado-rain and ping-pong-ball-sized hail.

B/c folks were doin' right by their mom's that day. I'm hopin' to hit up a donut ride at some point this summer but will definitely be hangin' in back, unless feeling REALLY jazzy. So, these crashes... are they the product of folks over riding their skill sets in the pack? Or just early season jitters? I was under the impression if you weren't displaying proper line holding/pack riding skills you'd be asked to head out to the back lest you wipe out some ranked rider.

I basically am terrified of damaging a tube by crankin' something too tight. It'll be a mix of Chorus and Record Campy, for the most part. FSA crank.. (Super Lights, I got from Krusty or the Gossamer that will come with the group), I think....3TTT in the bar stem, and Easton wheels. All I'll need to get after that is a seatpost. Oh yea and some Time ATAC pedals.... most likely just get the XS MTB pedals from MEC

yup all going on a Bianchi RC full carbon frame/fork (3.5lbs).
I'll be using Time MTB pedals so I can stay consistent with shoes/cleats across the board.

What happens in this instance? Are Cat 1/2 riders typically insured/sponsored or is this $x of their pride and joy just smashed away in a single wreck? How does that work in accidents re: equipment?

Sweet. I'll check this out on the weekend. MEC is pretty wishy/washy with their stock. Some years they have this style of pant for men, others they do not. On top of that, the products always change names... for some reason... Can't fault them, though: $28 MEC cycling jerseys are bomb-proof when all my $70 jerseys fall apart. Go figure.
