A bike that fine could never command more on the local CL unless someone chopped off the bosses, removed the brakes, installed some wood-grain-print Deep Vs, and installed risers.

yes you do.

actually did any of you guys catch the FLIPPING & RELISTINGS that have been happening on cragislist?

there was an 80';s aluminum trek 1500 that got converted to brifters + 9 speed rear wheel, decent ride and the guy only wanted $75. I emailed but too late.

give it 5 days later on the bike was RELISTED with new pics, being flipped for $450

I emailed the original $75 seller and just gave them a heads up their bike is being flipped and I got this reply:

Thanks for letting me know.
Too bad there's nothing I can do about it.
The bike's definitely not worth $450.
I feel badly for whoever buys it for that much.

.... thats really so so bad.. i would have loved riding this older brifter conversion...

trueno92 05-11-09 10:13 AM

fwiw, I mean, its tough times and yeah I guess if push came to shove a $75 flip this bike could have easily passed for $200.. but i mean, I think i would just keep it to ride it and could tell ppl that all it cost me was $75.

but $450?

since i emailed the seller the ad has been removed.

Probably better that you didn't buy it. A 1500 from the 80s would have 126mm spacing, which would have been spread out to 130mm for 9 speed. Spreading aluminum is a bad, bad idea, because it cracks.

This happens all the time and I am sure that the ad only disappeared because the guy sold it. At $450, a bike with Shimano 600 brifters is still a damnged good price and I am pretty sure it was the old 8-speed stuff, so I don't think it was spread to 130mm.

There is a guy who lists his location as 'North York' and he sells some really nice bikes that he picks up dirt cheap. He has "I want to buy a bike" ads all over the Kijiji listings around the GTA and I guess it works because he sells tons of bikes. I wanted a Zunow that he had and almost jumped at it for $400 but I couldn't bear to buy it since I know he only paid $100 for it in Brantford. I probably should have bought it since it was still a steal at $400 but dang, I am just too stubborn sometimes ;)

He had a very very very sweet Pinarello Treviso in perfect shape that was also my size the he wanted $500 for but again, I know that he only paid $200 so couldn't do it.

I once listed my old car for sale before I left Vancouver in '99. It was 4wd, and that commands a premium out there. I was asking about $2k below market value because it was an Ontario car originally, and had over 360k on it, albeit with a total rebuild at 280k.

The number of people who called me within hours of the listing coming out was astounding. Most were obviously professional curbsiders. The same thing happened when I listed my snowmobile for sale back in the mid '90s before moving out west.

Never list things on CL thinking you're going to be doing someone a favour by asking a low price. Almost guaranteed it will be resold for a profit. People troll the lists all day every day as a primary or side business. I have quite a hoard of spare parts, but I won't list any for sale. I'd prefer to respond to people in genuine need and just give them away.

Yep, that is why I think this guy in North York is a bit sketchy. His 'want' ads imply that he needs a bike for himself and, of course, this is not the case. He buys any size and, within days, they are re-listed on the Toronto CL for big bucks. Profitable. Yes. Honest? Not so much...

Yep. My Concorde is listed right now and I put it at a price that would only interest someone who wants to buy the bike to ride, not flip. I've had about 25 emails which isn't much at all since it has been up for nearly a week.

In other news, screw socks that aren't wool. Wool. **** yeah.

To be honest, I hope you're flexible. That's a very nice bike, but when I bought my Concorde two winters ago, I paid $260 at CS beaches. Granted, it had 105, not 600, but the price was fair.

I love the bike and I am only selling it because the new-to-me Battaglin is a bit nicer and will take it's place as the "everyday" bike but yeah, flexibility is pretty much expected on CL. I haven't taken the ad down yet because I was waiting for the first guy to get back to me after a bunch of email exchanges but I think he has flaked on me now....

It's not fair till you buy those pink track drops

kergin 05-11-09 08:01 PM

^^ If I still had the heart to build a tarck bike they would have been bought. How's this for tarck:

Pista Concept powder coated barbie pink with those bars & wood-grain Vs laced to pink phils. Campagnolo Pista cranks or gold ano'd SG75s. Possibly a white aerospokk for the front.

FWIW, I would be down for that if I didn't have my Miele and it actually fit me. Curse my distinctly average height.

I just hope I don't see it locked up in front of the Drake with pink deep-Vs once I sell it :(

Is this the guy who owns/rides it?

:p

also: pain in the ass dealing with "is this short sleeve or long sleeve weather... hmmm BOTH" between morning and evening rides.

I kind of like that crank.

Anyone here score that Cinelli pista on eBay? Went for a pretty good price because it was only available for local pickup.

MIELE UPDATE:
==================

the "$20 dream" is coming together surprisingly nicely....

Since the frame had really.. interesting.. brakes, I just decided to use that and try and reuse any of the lines that were just hanging on.. snippers and one fresh line for the front wheel and I was in business!

Pads were $3.25 for the fronts and the rears were reused 20yr old pads from the brava.

Now, witness this marvel of velo-engineering:

http://img142.imageshack.us/img142/6807/photo2i.jpg

That quick release is simplicity at its best! hahaha

I also figured this bike will not be ridden much on the hoods.. since there will be no hoods, at least not yet...

Now im just waiting on cushy bartape.. Anyone try the $7 planet bike stuff from MEC? right now they are out of black and only have PINK.....

http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/5451/photo3gxd.jpg

Also, SHELDON BROWN"S tool tip came in VERY HANDY and it worked for the fixed BB CUP REMOVAL!!

only thing was that home depot doesn't carry much larger than 5/16th's bolt size, and sheldon had recommended 5/8ths. I tightened down that sucker good and it finally budged loose. Thankfully there was no corossion and it looked as clean as when it was installed 20+ yrs ago..

If anyone wants to borrow my cup removal "tool", ur certainly welcome!

jet sanchEz 05-12-09 09:41 AM

I like the Planet Bike tape and I had the pink on my Ciocc for most of last year....I saved it and you can have it if you want, I think it might look cool with that frame.
