Edit: got my spell on. Basically the #35 bike route downtown and then back. Hills make me sad (100m of climbing on the way home which I've been told isn't a lot, but at the end of a long day can sometimes make me want to get off my bike and walk!). My bike is a KHS Flite 200 (http://www.khsbicycles.com/07_flite_200.htm) named chicken butt. I'm usually decked out in black lycra bottoms, a dark green jersey and bright green helmet with a bajillion-ton backpack! Oh yeah, look for the girl who looks like she's about to pass out, either from fear or exhaustion. That's me. This is also me: http://www.asybike.roosmachine.com Some very horrible picks of me out on my very first ride (as an adult). It was like 6 degrees that day so I'm all bundled up, but you can also see pics of the stickers I've got on my bike. |

O.K. back to reality. Unfortunately this is the opinion of WAY too many car drivers on the road these days. While I agree that the inpatience of cagers can be very frustrating, hitting folks cars will only make things worse. It does make you feel better while the adrenaline fades but after that it is really not worth it. In almost 10 years of messing on a brakeless fixie I had my fair share of run-ins with idiot car drivers....and pummeling my fair share of fenders and mirrors...now I try to take a more Zen like approach. And remember this....after smacking someones car, YOU may get away with it but the next cyclist that this person has a confrontation with may not get off so lucky. I related a story awhile back about an insane driver chasing a cyclist down my street...the wrong way. Garbage cans were flying...fences were run over in his attempt to get at the cyclist. Needless to say many on my street called 911 on this clown. Several hours later he was pulled over and a loaded 9mm handgun was found under his seat. You never know how deranged someone can be...especially when their precious cars are involved. |
9mm? pshht! My bike is a pipe bomb

cavernmech: you still have that airzounds (or whatever it's called) at the shop for me to try out? :) Asyrol: welcome! Don't let the cars freak you out too much. You'll get used to it after a little while. Just don't let them intimidate you. Once you start worrying you'll wind up paying too much attention to them and not enough to everything else. It's all about the zen! :D |

Cyclist killed by truck's mirror Jun. 7, 2006. 08:57 AM LINDA NGUYEN AND CAMILLE ROSS STAFF REPORTERS A 45-year-old cyclist was struck and killed by a dump truck Tuesday afternoon in Milton. Shortly before 5 p.m., the Burlington man who is not identified, was riding his bicycle north on Tremaine Rd., between Derry Rd. and Main St. when he was hit by the side mirror of the dump truck. The collision threw the man into a ditch, said Halton police Staff Sgt. Jeff Siemon. The cyclist was taken to Hamilton General Hospital but was later pronounced dead. The 30-year-old Grimsby man who was driving the truck was not injured. |

bett the truck driver will get a small fine for killing the guy on the bike
|
Seems a small price to pay. BUT if he's anything of a human being, he'll be guilt ridden for years to come.

Eyefloater how does it take to replace the bearings in the stearing tube? //// Cavernmech are my KHS track bikes in yet:D

When I yell at cars its usually "ITS A RED LIGHT, LADY!" or "WATCH THE ROAD!" Every once in a while I will ride up along next to a car and do a phone gesture with my hand. I only hit cars when they initiate contact with me; ie. I only hit back. I find the worst drivers are young men with their girlfriends in the car, because they really don't seem to see ANYTHING on the road and half the time they only avoid hitting me because their girlfriend screams. These guys are then followed by housewives and businessmen which I put on the same level because they all live in their heads, commute in from brampton and are constantly on their cell phones while lane changing. And they drive SUV's too and seem to be in a real hurry to get home and watch 'Lost'. Actually, taxis are the worst follwed by everyone else. Horrible, terrible taxis. I can't believe I have to share a lane with those guys on Bay St.
Also that Bay St. taxi/bus/bike lane is a travesty. The few times its not jammed with regular car traffic, its pretty much used as a parking lane for taxis. And if its not used as a parking lane for taxis you can be certian a taxi is going to buzz by you and cut you off immediately. Also if you get stuck behind a bus you're going to be choking unless you can pass it. And don't you dare tell people that they shouldn't be driving in that lane. I have made a few polite suggestions to some of the offending drivers and they get really really bitter and hateful right away and usually end up swearing at me or saying something to the effect of "I am the only person in my world". Another case of "lets give a lane to cyclists thats actually more dangerous than having no lane for cyclists at all" a la the harbord and college bike lanes. |
