What is a HAIRSHIRT?
and why is it named that?

sr20det 06-25-06 12:20 AM

its some INSANE 300 or so km ride that happens once a year and its run by TBN.
and I've got no clue why its called that.

Ill Mitch 06-25-06 02:15 AM

Just woke up for the hairshirt: http://tbn.ca/cycling/hairshirt.htm

I'm nervous, wish us luck, I'll post when I get home.

somnambulant 06-25-06 06:46 AM

bahahaha.. wf? In case the front wheel comes off your (literal) bullhorn-equipped bike, don't get it jammed into these holes we chiseled into the street?

Maybe not the best place to post this, but it IS Toronto, so...

My store in North York is looking to hire one person, full-time or darned close to it. Wrenching ability is a plus, but mostly we need someone for the floor. We do bikes in the summer, but a lot of hockey, soccer, curling and baseball too, so someone that is into other sports would be a bonus. Oh, we need someone who can continue to work daytime hours through the winter.

If any of you know someone who might fit the bill, tell them to stop by Spokes and Sports on Avenue Rd near Wilson. PM me here if you want more info.

I don't know the route of the hairshirt ride, but London to Mount Albert (~250 km) takes me a good 10 hours, so anything less than 15 hours for 325 km is really awesome!

the record for the hairshirt last year was set at 10:06; that is an insane time for a double (in miles) century.

anyone going out for a ride today?

eyefloater 06-25-06 08:01 AM

Hairshirt, kick some ass guys - you'll do great.

NIN was one of the best shows I've seen in my life. Sweet mercy, so good.

HA! Awesome. It literally looks like the guy is getting thrown off a bull.

One time my front wheel DID actually come off.
I was riding with no skewer after it broke doing some drops.
On the ride home, my weight was the only thing keeping the wheel connected.
I went to bunny hop the curb. Silly me.
You can imagine the rest of the details.
It looks sort of like the picture.

lymbzero 06-25-06 11:49 AM

I'm up for a ride. I'd like to go east to Little India. I want to pick up a small box of cookies. The flavor has my dying for more.

central meeting spot is fine.

the hairshirt is always usually hot or rainy. last year it was something like 40 degrees with the humidity, i had salt stains on my shorts and jersey when i got home. i should have gone this year, it's a great feeling when you finish...

32flavours 06-25-06 02:24 PM

Hmm... well I can only make it if it's later, like 930ish. But if you guys want to go earlier, I'll just give one of you a call to meet up. Cool beans.

STEEKER 06-25-06 03:24 PM

I had wayyyyyyyyy too much spice at dinner but I'll show up 8:30/9:00 at Dundas square

32flavours 06-25-06 05:51 PM

I will hopefully be there by 9. Otherwise I'll just call one of you guys. Yay riding.

jeremywhitehorn 06-25-06 05:56 PM

9 dundas square. be there or be...oh that joke is horrible.

steeker - japanese hidden camera shows are the best (as are game shows), much better than ours. i enjoyed muchly.

Ill Mitch 06-25-06 06:44 PM

just had a nap and a shower after the Hairshirt. feels sooooo good to be done and non salty.

we finished in 11 hours and 40 minutes including breaks, with an average speed of 30km/h, got a pretty sweet sunburn and I can't move out of my chair without feeling sore.

but all in all it was a great ride, I had some doubts but then just forgot about everything and kept on going.

And I set the record for being the youngest rider with the fastest time :D
