Ok guys, since the search function is disabled, I want some opinions on which pedals to buy for my new fixie...

I'm deciding between the CB Eggbeater SL, Time Atac XS, CB Candy SL, or Shimano SPD PD-M540.

I was originally going for old-school MKS Nuevo pedals with toe clips/straps, but my LBS can't get them for me.

So, give me your opinions. I've heard good and bad things about the beaters ie, hot spots, crappy, soft cleats, etc... I don't know much about the Time or Candys.

I've clipped out of SPD's while skidding/skipping and that wasn't fun... :)

I don't know what the hell "hot spots" are, but you're not the first person I've heard that from re: eggbeaters. That said, I really think they're the best pedals I've ever owned, strictly talking about how they feel/function. 4-sided clip-in can't be wrong! I have a set of Candy SL's on my roadbike, and while I like those as well, they're a little more difficult to clip into (although similar to any other pedal system I've ever used) than the eggbeaters. They do feel slightly more "supportive" though. I don't think the soft cleats for both of those options are really a big deal though. They still last quite a long time with regular city use. I haven't tried out the hardened "premium" cleats yet, but I might give those a go the next time I need replacements.

That said, my Eggbeaters are feeling pretty rough right now. I think I'm going to try and pick up a rebuild kit (anyone have a local source on these?) sometime soon I think.

I've popped out of Shimano/Ritchey pedals way too many times to want to use them on my fixie where I need to be firmly attached in order to stop, and seeing eyefloater unclip and crash TWICE doesn't give me much confidence in the Time pedals either (that might be unfounded though as I've heard basically nothing but good things about them). I've only accidently popped out of my eggbeaters twice in a year, and both times were while using very worn out cleats and I tend to pull up hard when skidding/skipping.

ATAC pedals rule my world, so much better then SPDs I don't have much experience with the beaters, so I'll leave those opinions to other, more knowledgable sources.

Offhoff what kind of colours were you allowed to choose? Price? Deposit or pay upfront? Turnaround time? What kind of prepartion (besides taking everything off the frame did you have to do? (mask headset/bb threads yourself)?

I can make it out to 'sauga but it's a real pain in the ass, any places closer to downtown?

I've used both Jetcoat and Spectrum and I am happier with the results from Spectrum for a couple of reasons: 1) cheaper 2) the coating seems thinner and more like paint----the word "Ciocc" embossed on the seat-stays was basically lost when I had the frame re-coated by Jetcoat whereas it was clearly visible the first time I'd had it done by Spectrum.

The turnaround was a few days for both companies. The colours are pretty much limitless for both companies. Spectrum doesn't sandblast it for you like Jetcoat does. I paid $75 for Jetcoat to blast and coat my Ciocc black and paid Spectrum $30 to coat my Colnago conversion black.

edit: Now that I think about it, I don't think Jetcoat actually sandblasted the Ciocc, I think they just powder-coated on top of the old coating because there really is no way that embossing would have been filled if it had been stipped, it is just too deep. I noticed on the fork that the old rust bubbles seemed to still be underneath the coating, so I really think they just powder-coated the frame/fork without blasting it. Damn.

Map to Spectrum

Hmm, is it an option to specify sandblast for Jetcoat? Does spectrum include sandblasting in their $30?

No and no. Jetcoat said I could take it down to the frame but that they would sand-blast it anyways (I am still not 100% sure that they really did sandblast it) and Spectrum needs it down to the bare metal. It took me an afternoon to get the frame down to the metal with Poly-Stripper. If I ever get another frame powder-coated, I will go to Spectrum. I've had 3 frames powder-coated, the Ciocc twice, and so far, Spectrum has left me the most satisfied. They are really laid back as well but very nice and they quoted me $30 for the Colnago but dropped it to $20 when there was a slight blemish in the powder-coat. I didn't even notice it until they pointed it out.

In my pedals' defence, I can cite two incidents where Wes' Eggbeaters unclipped just by skipping. After my week of stupidity, there have been no repeat performances of unintended unclips (though don't skid w/ ATACs when your weight is way back ... common sense for any pedal which I completely lacked).

Personally, I'd either go w/ ATACs or Candy SLs. Those are also really nice pedals.

Those two times were close together in time however, and were both due to excessively worn cleats. I normally don't ever have to think about them at all (or really think about weight transfers for pedal-related reasons). But, as I said, I've heard nothing but good things about the Time ATAC's and lots of complaints (reliability related) about the Eggbeaters.. YMMV.

Thanks for the insights guys. I'm probably going to go for the eggbeaters. Either the C or SL ones and get the premium cleats.

However, the SL versions have to be installed via an 8mm hex, which might pose a problem. I dunno if they're worth the price because of that. I think the C versions can be installed either the standard 15mm wrench or the 8mm hex way.
