proper gloves = rubber/latex/vinyl. Anything to keep solvents off your hands.

My highschool art teacher used to paint in oils with bare hands and would clean them with turpentine every day. One day it started to look like it was raining everywhere to him, even indoors. It got steadily worse and in a few days he went blind. He had dangerous levels of turpentine in his blood and it took over a month to get his sight back and he hasn't got a drop of solvent on his skin since.

I have worked with acetone with bare hands (never again, I had a serious deadline that could not afford time to go and get gloves) and it has made me feel absolutely terrible, with blurred vision, full body pains and a nasty headache. That stuff is deadly. Absolutely do it outside and depending on the solvent it may be a good idea to wear a mask

hahah.. i was a bit excited that an "izakaya" was opening up on the esplanade. wow, good eats and cheap beer!! i could not have been more wrong. it's another one of those trendy asian places popping up like mould all over the place. i went there once with my gf to see if the food was any good. $15 for ramen. :eek: ...i know, i know..paying for the atmosphere..whatever. someone also thought that having huge communal tables would be a good idea there..haha. a year later and it's still there so i guess they're doing ok.. or someone with deep pockets is bank-rolling the place.
sapporo bought out sleeman for almost half a billion right? damn.. for that much money, they'd better start selling that stuff overseas. i've seen moosehead at don quixote(kinda like a japanese walmart but compressed into a becker's). that place has got a great beer selection. the first time i had czech pilsner was from there!

Bah. Spectrum says they can't do bicycle frames until "after spetember". Blast & Coat says it's $125 for blast + powdercoat for frame :( Wtf.

Izakaya survives on rich bay st. types. I've been taken there on a variety of occasions for business lunches. Its OK but there is much much much better japanese in this city, with a whole lot less pretension. I just wish there was a decent and affordable ramen restaurant downtown.

I just gunked it on and used steel wool to get it off. I applied liberally, let it sit for about half an hour and then took the steel wool to it. Put a lot of the stuff in the hard to reach places and you might want to drop by the dollar store and buy some cheap steel brushes to get in those spots. You'll probably have to do this process a few times....it took me an afternoon or so. I used gloves and did it in the backyard, you'lll want a lot of ventilation.

Why are you waiting on a BB tool? I always see them at MEC. And $125 seems really steep....maybe she's caught on and realizes there is money to be had in the bicycle market? I was quoted $125 for a paint job with clearcoat by an auto-guy, powder-coating should be waaaaay cheaper.

Thats a road pedal....won't work with the shoes you are workin.

I proved you right and learned skid stops at the expense of my leg flying out the pedal...so now I realllllly need to cop some pedals :( mo money mo problemz...will come down with daughter later this week so she can check out that bike if thats ok with you?

The ones I have look like a pair of cotton work gloves that have been dipped in some sort of bright yellow liquid plastic that has since hardened. You should be able to get them at Home Despot, or a hardware store on the cheap.

Don't get that paint stripper stuff in your eyes-seriously-safety googles are a good idea. Leaving the goop on the frame for a long time makes getting the paint off easier and won't damage the steel. The hardest part is around the ridges of the lugs, but it will all come off. All in all it is a really easy, if somewhat messy, job. Keep a wet rag around to wipe that stuff off your skin in case any spashes on you-it takes a few seconds, but then it starts to burn like crazy.

I went for a long ride last night and I always forget how crappy the roads can be in this city.

I took Keele all the way up to the 401 and man, there is broken glass everywhere, potholes that are actually holes and not just indentations in the tarmac, those sewer grates that are not chevroned but are the old style straight grab-your-wheel-and-kill-you type and people in their cars kept looking at me like I was some kind of rare bird or something.

I took Dufferin back down, thinking the hills would be fun (they were!) but I forgot about that super duper motherfkr between St.Clair and Davenport. That thing is steep and I missed the light and I couldn't stop fast enough so I had to bail..... Funny thing was, there were these two BMX kids pushing their bikes up the hill just when I jumped and they looked at me and I looked at them and I did that Pee-Wee Herman thing "I meant to do that!" and they looked at me like I was nuts. I guess that is an old-timers joke :cry: ;) How embarassing!

dude.. have you seen how jungle-massive Look cleats are? There's no way in hell I'd be clip-clopping around in those around the city. I'd only put those on a bike used only for racing/touring/etc (i.e. a situation where I will hopefully never have to walk).

I use looks and road shoes on my silly bike, eggbeaters and mountain shoes on my commuter bike and I used to use clips and straps and nike dunks for commuting. I was considering using the looks for commuting, but I couldn't bear the thought of walking up the 5 stairs to my work in my sidis. For booting around town nothing beats the 4 sided ****** proof balls-saving entry ease of eggbeaters. Anything more than 10km and I might consider swapping in the look pedals, because they ARE much better in general.

I got rid of Looks in favor of Times, no float in 'em. I messed in them for ages. They can be walked in, but they are not designed for it well. As soon as that little rubber bumper on the bottom wears, skids are fun, and you can break the front off a worn cleat off walkin on it.

hahah.. I totally forgot about that. Yeah, that was me. I wasn't sure if you saw my "morning grimmace" either. That was all I could manage.. :P And yeah, swapped out my bars for something I found in the basement at Cavern. If you hadn't noticed, my bike now comes upstairs with me every day. After my wheel got stolen, I'm not taking any chances. You should come out to Critical Mass on Friday if you have anything to ride.

Rode last night for a bit digesting massive coronary schnitzel a la chef me. Operator... I like that two turtle lights setup on the front, seems to catch peoples eyes, even in the mirrors. Must....go.....faster. Buddy said he'd hook me up with one of his wireless bike 'puters so I can gauge my speeds now. Keith your opinion on the Fuji cross? Any other cross rider/store types want to throw in two cents regarding cross bikes, feel free. Cross so that I might toss another set of wheels on it and going a roadying.

yo thanx for the suggestions guys...after keith told me you need a next shoe for the look pedals and the jungle massive size cleats i think Ill stick to gettin the eggbeatz....makes more sense...I wanna just make sure I dont get that foot pulling out the pedal prob (im riding worn out onzas atm) ...if the eggbeaterz take care a that then Ill get them...how long is the cm ride for?
