You don't need really high power to ride on pavement. I would think even 2 x 10W halegen would be lots. Beam pattern is important, plus you can get tons more light out of halegen bulbs if you overvolt them, but bulb life suffers. Make sure you get something with a true smart charger.

Yeah I did some research into those lights and the biggest cost of the DIY system is the battery and charger. The bulbs w/housing themselves are real cheap, $3-$15. In comparison a NIMH battery with (non-smart) charger that lasts 3-4 hours for a 10w is $160+.

you might try reading this article by the randonneurs. those guys know all about riding in the dark for nights on end. the consensus is to use a generator powered light. sometimes more expensive but worth it.

But generators have drag. This guy wont put fenders on his bike cause of drag. The sweet hub generator's prolly add .001% drag...too much for our bud operator.;)

Lol, I kid. The hub generators only produce 3w? Is that enough to see where you're going? I'm looking to put a 10w/10w or a 10w/15w mr11's @ 12v. With a 13.2v 10Ah, Nimh pack I can get around 5 hours runtime with both on.

Darkmother: when you said smart charger, did you mean the ones with battery sensing/complete shutoff, temperature based turn off or set charge time/trickle?

yes, i've heard about the drag issue. from what i understand the new shimano generator hub is supposed to be dura-ace quality and have much less resistance than it's predecessor. and the shmidt dyno hub has even less. probably more drag on a slightly malajusted hub.

i just googled a bunch and they aren't as expensive as you'd think. some were in the $300US+ range. i think the problem would be headlights from on-coming traffic and strapping the thing to your head tight enough so that it doesn't fall off and bounce across the road. besides, cops + asian guy in pseudo-terrorist-looking gear on a bike in richmond hill.. hmmmm... rob, aren't you on their computer already?

Sweep, i saw a photo of a certain crank bros tattoo on martino's bike lane diary (images of critical mass). anyone you know?

you can get programable chargers with their own powersupply that can operate ac or dc for 80 bucks. u can seat peak mv, trickle and charging current for different battery types. check out the duratrax pirana...that thing is probably less than 80 these days and tops out at a 3amp charge rate.

if you had your own powersupply that u can run, get a lipo charger...they are only like 50 bucks for a 2 cell charger...and batteries can be had for under 100 depending what capacity you were looking for.

another route is going with one of those tactical lights that run off primary 123s...they have low voltage cut off to protect batteries as well as a regulated current draw so that you always get consistent brightness all the way till the end of the battery cycle. you can get luxeon bulbs that run off a single 123 that outputs 80 lumens...that's plenty bright for road riding.

additionally, these mostly have tuned optics for a very clean beam battern...no hotspots and tons of residual side spill. i personally run a HSD EDC 60 :D
