You can get in there through the laneway entrance off George Street, just South of Queen. It's just the first laneway going behind that block.

You can set it to gauge ambient light and heat and only produce enough extra to reach a basleine level that you set. You can track exactly how much energy has gone into which socket at what time of day to find ways to save even more energy. Just watch out for when the house gains self awareness and puts you down the garburator.

If you paired that system with an efficient building envelope (lots of insulation, lots of double glazed windows, no leaks), geothermal heating with radiant dispersal, on-demand water heating (no tank), a green roof with solar panels, and efficient appliances you would be in a seriously energy efficient and easy to live in home. You can use a sh*tload of high quality recycled building materials these days as well

A buddy of mine whose parents left him much greater means has a series of homes that are all automated like that. He's got the system down to the point that the computers check the internet and if his flight is going to be late or traffic is particularly bad (it can tell via his phones GPS and the airlines flight scheds) it can adapt its schedule accordingly. Its very odd to walk into a house that no one has been in for months and the house has ordered food and linens and such.

rob/op, love your new ride. what is it? were you lonely at lunch or did you meet up?

There's an amazing house profiled in the newest issue of Dwell (which is the "Smaller is Smarter" issue) in Tokyo. Obviously they know how to do small + efficient. :)

Shiznaz 05-11-07 01:49 PM

Throw one of the vaccuum cleaner robots and a body builder who can do the robot and other household chores and you're set!

Also: Pandora (www.pandora.com) has been treating me to a really great mix of music today. (Current track: "Ted" by Clark)

somnambulant 05-11-07 02:18 PM

I'm not totally sure if I'll have time to swing by the shop today as I have to go to Cycle Therapy and try and suck my way into a quick tune up. :P

Shiznaz 05-11-07 02:24 PM

Keith, done, but know I will use this as an opportunity to ask when I can bring in my cross bike for a touring overhaul. The line at the lcbo is going to be NASTY

same issue, the couple living in a 400sq ft studio!!! if only we all were that organized..... an older issue of wallpaper had a more extensive article on custom/prefab in japan. pretty cheap (from 250K) if you can deal with the size.

Shiznaz 05-11-07 02:27 PM

Once you stop being forced to be such a huge consumer, you find you don't actually need all that much space. As long as a unit has lots of natural light I don't mind if its small. Then you just surround yourself with really nice stuff in small amounts. Thats why stuff in japan is really small and high quality.

Yeah, that studio was f'ing awesome. And it's a rental too, which is even crazier I think (to do all that work in a rental unit). Dude custom designed all the kitchen storage in a CAD application based on each section's typical contents. Can you say "obsessive compulsive disorder?" :)

I don't think it's normal to have storage that is designed precisely around specific packaging sizes.

The shape of the rear chainstay makes me think it's an oxford chainless. You can get them at Bicycles@St-Clair (http://www.oxfordchainless.com/). I don't see a cable to suggest a rear internal hub, so it may be fixed or at least ss.

that was a ****ign awesome safety m33ting k thx

also: bicycles.

There is a Toronto trick and it happened on my street a couple years back. You need to hunt down an old and aging "ontario cottage". you basically find a crappy old detached bungalow on a decent lot, rip it down, and build a brand new semi. For the cost of building a new house you are actually building 2. Live in one and sell the other side and you've covered the cost of building the house. If yer really good you'll even be able to take a dent out of the original purchase price...

Yes risky but if yer savvy you could be in a good spot.

Don't the cops have bigger things to worry about at 1 am Friday night? I was out and saw all sorts of shiit going on and there were no cops around at all. I even had a drunken ****** collapse on top of me at Gazzelle; busting cyclists, that's crazy.

shapelike 05-12-07 05:48 AM

Damn, gboy, you're having a tough time w/ the bike lately.
