I have eaten them older than that. I survived. They were the Margarita flavor, IIRC.

HAHA...it's not cheap....just didnt make it to the store to buy new. I'll toss them I think. Got 1 sleeve that expires next month.

It's not as if they're real food- just inert chemicals and junk- would probably be good 10 years from now [Well...as good as they can be....]

They're fine. The stuff they're made from doesn't go bad. I've had way older.

My wife got a few large 72 count (I think) boxes about 2.5 years ago at some product demo, and I've been using them ever since. Their "expiration" date was in June of 2013. Never had any issues whatsoever. Texture is a little harder than a "fresh" one but...whatevs...

I got food poisoning symptoms one time after a long bike ride where I consumed numerous things including a couple expired cliff shots. I have no idea if the expired cliff shots were actually the cause of the food poisoning, but I tossed the entire pack just in case and no longer eat any expired cliff products.

Eat one today and see if you have any adverse reactions. If none, then you're good to go.

On another note I've eaten chocolate gu that was past expiration. The chocolate separates from the "gu" and it becomes like chocolate chips. I survived. My stomach can also handle Chinese street food so your mileage may vary. The only thing my stomach can't seem to handle is Osmo. That stuff gives me the runs!

As long as they don't have mold on them they'll be fine. The expiry dates put on most food are arbitrarily set and have little to nothing to do with the quality or safety of the food. The military did a study a few years back and found they were throwing away millions of dollars worth of perfectly good pharmaceuticals merely because they had past their 'expiry' date.

If the pharmaceutical industry can't afford to study the efficacy of their drugs after extended time periods you can be sure the sports nutrition industry isn't testing either. Expiry dates are set by marketing managers not scientists.

Actually, they're set by the idiotic FDA- but, as you mentioned, they're completely bogus. They even mandate expiry dates on bottled water now... WATER! "Oh, I can't drink this water, it's over a year old!"..... [How do they get rid of "expired" water? I mean, if you burn it, it just makes steam vapor, which condenses into water again; pour it in the ground...it works it's way back into the aquifer.... I think we need Expired Water Containment Facilities- where we can bring expired water, and it will be hermetically-sealed and buried, so as not to ever again be a danger to living creatures! Thank goodness we have the FDA to protect us! )

No, the FDA doesn't do any testing on pharmaceuticals or medical products. They rely on the manufacturers to provide sufficient evidence to support whatever they are claiming. In the case of expiration it's expensive and time consuming for the manufacturer to test drugs over an extended period of time so it's simpler (and more profitable) to list a shorter expiry date.

So get a fresh pack or two for your century ride tomorrow. Why take a chance if the ride is anything special for you? Don't use new shoes or old food on a major ride.

But eat a pack on a longer training ride. They're basically flavored sugar. The consistency will change over time. But do you throw out sugar if it's been in the cupboard for two years?

If you don't get sick from eating that pack, keep eating them on those longer training rides.
