Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Motivation Help?

I have found a new phenomenon in my life recently: not wanting to ride.

I am a full time grad school student, working on my doctorate in Physical Therapy. I go to school about 40 hours a week, plus on top study about 20 hours a weekend, and 1-2 hours per night during week days depending on how tired I am. I have recently lost a lot of motivation to ride. Its really scary, almost like I feel guilty for going out riding when I should be studying or working on something. I also get too tired to come home and ride, plus it doenst help that I am in school from 8-4 or 5 every day. But here is the weird part. I love riding weekends, and often ride 40 mi group rides saturday and sunday.

Does anyone else get so stressed that they DONT want to ride? The intereset in bikes is still there, I am constantly on forums, websites, etc. The love is there, but the actual ride part during the week, I am too stressed out to ride? WTF?

I am a busy guy too but make time to ride, period. If you can't find enough time in a week to go then you just don't want it bad enough. All of the forums, websites, etc... mean nothing if you don't get out there so go ride!!!

Sometimes when I have the time to ride, and the weather is perfect, I just get dressed and go anyway. Sometimes I find the motivation and put in a good ride. Other times I JRA for a for an hour, and have a beer at a bench near my home, and watch the world go around.

Not every ride is a good one, but riding makes me feel better no matter how seriously the ride was.

How tired would you be, if you weren't in good shape from your exercise? As a Physical Therapist, you should know this.

Maybe change the time of day that you are riding, and shorten the riding sessions, but make them more intense.

Having a goal will help you keep motivated, whether it's a race, or fitness level, or a pr on your favourite stretch of road.
