Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

1st Century Completed

This past Sat I finally did a centuy, 105 miles to be exact. It took me 6hr and 46 mins of saddle time, and about 8 hrs of real time when I add in all the pit stops and lunch with the family. I started out near my house in The Pasadena area and ended in Carlsbad where i meet the family again and started my vacation. The best part was the rain in carlsbad for the last 5 miles. Other than my thighs feeling like they were on fire at mile 70 and knee pain at mile 85 it was a good ride.

Congrats! I remember on my first century at about mile 80 I was never, ever, going to do another damn century as long as I lived. That was about 20 century rides ago.

Amen! Except I usually end up questioning my sanity every century at about 80 miles... it takes 3 weeks or so to forget how much I hate mile 80 and then I'm good again.

Great job! That's a terrific route too, some forum friends and I did an abbreviated version of the same thing from Anaheim to the pizza port in Carlsbad a few weeks ago.

You should sign up for Cruisin the Conejo on May 9. Cool breeze in August is also awesome. Conejo is a little lumpier than Pasadena to Carlsbad though.

Wow congrats I was thinking about doing something like that also, but have been off the bike recently due to getting the flu and then a reoccurring back injury. I like the idea of doing a 1 way ride and just getting picked up and a nice long lunch break probably helped out as well.

Next one I'm scheduled for is Cool Breeze, though I think a few from the C/A are doing Cruisin' the Conejo in a couple of weeks. We also just did our Anaheim to Carlsbad ride about a month ago. 70 miles total. Good times, good people.

Edit: I hadn't read the whole thread. TrojanHorse pretty much beat me to everything I said.

Too bad i missed that ride to Pizza Port. PhotoJoe told me about it but it was the wifes bday. I dont think she wouldve taken kind to me bailing on her to do a ride. Funny how these ride work out. Cant do the Conejo ride cuz wife is on a retreat and the Cool Breeze ride looks fun but thats two weeks after the Tour de Big Bear. Speaking of, anyone doing that ride this year? I did the 50 last year aiming for the 70 this year.

Actually, I've been meaning to do that one for a few year and never quite got around to it... the timing looks good too. It'll be good training for cool breeze.

Congratulations! I just did my first half century last week. My next goal is a metric century by the end of the summer. I look forward to my first century next year.

Other peoples' first century threads are major inspirations for me. Thanks!!!

Thanks for all the kudos. I definitely need to put in more miles so the next century doesnt hurt as much.

I too just did my first half last weekend. This weekend I am doing 45 & at the end of the month I am planning a metric century. I still can't imagine doing a full yet I hope to get there next year.
