Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Socks

Ok? My mom always said there was no such thing as a stupid question??? I only own no show socks in my everyday life. I never wear pants! I only own shorts. What's the deal with cycling socks?? Do you have to wear them? Why not have no shows??

If they are comfortable for you, then go ahead. Personally, I hate no show socks because they let the rim of my shoe chafe against my ankle. Taller socks prevent that. I do use $2 running socks instead of those $10 "cycling socks".

Once you ride in wool socks-- just once-- you won't ride in anything else. For me, low-cut Pearl Elites. Feet stay magically cool in the heat and warm in the cold. WIZARDRY. If you've only been riding in cotton socks, you're just being unnecessarily mean to your feet.

+1 on wool. Ultimately it comes down to personal comfort. If what you're doing works for you, keep doing it. Yes it's kind of silly to spend ten bucks on a pair. otoh, I just went nuts on a gob of sock guys socks with different heights so I can find what works best for me. From super short lucky 13s to calf high all americans. I like the quality of them over cotton. And as far as the fashion end is concerned, I don't really care what others think. Socks can be fun to look at. Taco tuesday !

i dont really understand sport-specific socks. i have thick wool socks i use for hiking and skiing at the same time. for cycling, i use some generic athletic socks.

Do you summer wool users like wool better than coolmax/poly?

Yep. Wool socks year round, got rid of all the other ones. Great for cycling, hiking, skiing, and just for being comfortable. Thick ones to keep warm in the winter, thinner ones in the summer. My feet stay dry and cool even on those hot days when the sun is beating down.

Cool! I have several pairs of DeFeet all season wool socks that I got for winter, but they are too low. I'll try them for hot weather use!!

Since my feet barely fit into my shoes without socks I wear ultra thin "Thirty 48" cycling socks. While on a cold day that are not great, on a warm or hot day my feet don't get hot at all. I was skeptical at first, but they make a huge difference to me. Kept me from having to order custom Bonts.

I can't stress how much better my feet feel in wool even on hot days.

Was out in wool socks in 82F, I was sweating like pig by the end of the ride, but my feet were fine.

I don't know if I'd go THAT far... I finally bought some wool socks a few weeks ago (one thicker wooly bully pair and one Defeet summer pair) and they were great. Not "man, this feels good" just more that I just didn't think about my feet ONCE on a 70 mile ride in hot weather.

I'll still wear all my other socks but I'm digging through the sock drawer for longer rides.
