Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

A riddle....

If the proper term for the part of your bike that you sit on is a "saddle", then why do you mount it on a seat post? Why not put it on a saddle post? Or change the name to "seat"?

If the proper term for the tube the fork goes through is the "head tube" then why don't we call the stem the "helmet" since it sits on top of the "head tube"?

Why do the British call the crankset a "chainset" when there is no chain involved in its construction?

Why is it called a derailleur when it rails as much as it derails?

Good question. I'm British and I don't know why. I've always called it a "crank".

I think the saddle is most correctly called a 'saddle' because that's what it is. If you must change the name of something to satisfy your OCD, tell yourself you are mounting your saddle on a 'saddle post.'

Since every bike has a fork, and many riders carry a tire spoon, why would anyone ditch their pie plate?

Why is there a bottom bracket but no top bracket since having a bottom one would imply there is a top one, otherwise, it's redundant.

Why do we always hear about the disgruntled workers going on rampages, when most workers are gruntled and have no problem? You never hear about the gruntled people, who make up the majority.
