Road Bike Lock

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Road Bike Lock

Does anyone have a recommendation on a light lock? I have a big kryptonite u-shaped lock but I am looking for something I can bring with me on local road rides if I run in to grab coffee or use the bathroom. Since this is my road bike not my hybrid commuter I dont have somewhere to attach a big heavy lock to lug around for rides, nor due I need another 5lbs being dragged behind me or in a backpack.

It keeps honest people honest.

I bring my bike inside the store/cafe for all my rest stops. Any store that doesn't allow bikes inside doesn't deserve a dollar of my hard earned cash.

How much weight and size are you willing to carry? At some point, like that cable lock above, it's almost not worth it.

Sometimes that's not a problem and other times it's not possible. Also sometimes you don't have a choice of where to stop since there might not be another shop for 5 miles.

I can afford the 90 grams the lock weighs for the security that it will not just walk away.

And YES... if someone has cutters, they can cut the cable. The lock is what it is... it doesn't pretend to be high security.

I've got a 5' long 3/8" cable and a medium security Master Lock padlock. The cable coils up nicely to fit into a jersey pocket and is light enough that I tend to forget about it during the ride. It is what is often referred to as a walk-off lock. It discourages joy riders and opportunists, maybe buys you a small bit of time with an inept thief, but won't put up much of a fight against a serious and well equipped bike thief. I try to park in well lit, well traveled areas with security cameras, and where I can see it from inside the store/cafe if possible.
