Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

There are shop rides and a few other rides in the area that start early in the morning or are quite fast. I don't mind these rides, but hate getting up early in the morning every day of the week. I enjoy to sleep in on occasion, so I did a later in the morning ride that was more of a B level/no drop ride to try to get more people into riding longer distances and not be as aggressive as some of the others. So I started "Spandex Sundays".

We did a nice leisurely pace the first 12-15 miles, then stopped for coffee, then kicked things up a bit on the way back. Then we went out for beers and food afterwards. All in all a great day. And people are already asking when will we be doing it again...I'm feeling kind of proud of myself.

Thats me on the right with the lightning bolts:

Then I guess she had a sneezing fit from allergies (I found out later she ended up cutting out with the 40 mile option) and I completely lost her.

Otherwise fairly uneventful. The last 10 miles of the ride has the 3 largest climbs and I was definitely getting tired by that time since I've not been doing a lot of long distance this year. Came in between 15-16 average (ugh) pace which is what I was shooting for.

Still waiting for results for the one timed section (1 mile hill climb toward the end). I did it in 00:06:39 and first place men's was sub 4 minute and women's was 4.5 minutes. They said they would email results today.
15-16 mph is very respectable for a century ride.

Nice one.

Way to drop the lady too.

(Just kidding, she probably didn't want to ride with you anyway.)

(Besides you're a married man.)

Well, she said she waited around for awhile to see me cross the finish line, and she left a note on my windshield. I talked about my wife enough that I'm pretty sure it was just a friendly note. Boys and girls can just ride together right, @Heathpack?

Well, that sounds like a charity ride with a happy ending

Yeah, it's a really well done event. This is the second year I've done it and it was an improvement over the prior year. I will continue to do it.

Yesterday, my wife ran the Chicago Rock and Roll Half Marathon. The race started at 6:30 am, she finished in about 2.5 hours. It was very hot and humid. She said that they ran out of EMT's.

I asked the EMT at the MN Major if there were any medical emergencies and he said nothing bigger than a band-aid. We lucked out with a fairly mild summer day in the mid 80's. My Garmin showed average of 86 with a high of 97. Direct sun always skews it high though.

She said people were going down as they got inside a mile to the finish line. She ran with some friends. Which is good, they look out for each other. She said they walked through all of the water stations just so they could get extra water.

Just for @Heathpack : Had to replace the battery door on my Stages today. I fiddled and fiddled with the old door and couldn't make the unit restart. Put a new door on and PRESTO!, instant power. How in the hell does a door/seal go bad that has never been touched?

Good for her! Amazing it was that tough on the participants starting that early. The ones here are January/ February and frankly too damn cold for my blood.

Nice post and photo, Speshul. I am in the boat of deciding whether I want to pirate the remnants of my collapsed group into a new, much smaller group ride. I also debated trying to start a single speed group ride, but that would probably look much like all of my solo rides.

Road vibrations? Lots of pedal strokes? I think its something to do with the little metal tabs inside and how well the door holds the battery against them.

Our regular dog groomer came down with COPD/Heart issues, so the shop only does tiny little dogs now. I called around to make an appointment at other shops, and got nothing but crap.

"What kind of dog?"

"Magic Marker"

"We don't do those."

WTF? So, I took Indy to a self service one, and used some nice Tea Tree shampoo. She smells like a lily, and I know all the soap was rinsed out. I did such a fine job, Mrs. LAJ has decided I get to go do Georgia-Mae in the very near future. That might not be as fun.

It was easily my most expensive kit I ever purchased and I can't compare it to Rapha or Assos, but it's super nice compared to the Heavy Pedal/Twin Six stuff (not that there is anything wrong with that stuff, but the Black Sheep stuff is top notch). Really nice chamois, thin and stretchy, and breathes really well. The pictured kit is the one Black Sheep did for my bike shop, apparently it sold out within a day on the first run and this was the second which sold out pretty quickly too so Black Sheep is redoing some of their past seasons for the shop. I should have one of the cool flower ones next month!

Actually, it wasn't too bad. Only around 97 degrees when we started. The humidity was high though because it rained the night before. Nothing major once we started riding though.

We have a fixed/SS ride in town too, but they usually go 80-100 miles...so it's not really intermediate rider friendly. They also leave at 5am!
