Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My headset bearings were contaminated ...

With dirt and locked up.

10 month old 2015 TARMAC.

My mechanic upgraded with better bearings, is this just normal wear ?

Did she get put away wet and hung up to dry on a regular basis? By any chance? I can tell you that a seized, or nearly seized, bearing is very unusual but there are circumstances that might make it more likely.

Did you ever drive it through a rain or snow storm on top of your car? This shouldn't be a problem but if the bearing was defective to begin with, it could accelerate the wear.

Well i rode all winter since last fall and got caught in rain several times this year because we've had a very wet spring/summer.
Now im wondering about my crank bearings, will prolly replace at years end if not sooner.

2600 miles as of now.

Do you keep your bike outside in the rain? There's no excuse for a headset going bad on a 2015 model. Even at pro mileage the headset should be fine. Either you're Thor destroyer of bicycles or you got a serious lemon with that Tarmac.

You've certainly put enough miles to warrant a peek. Haha I'm reminded of a long trip down the coast on my motorcycle. I was 900 miles away when the front cam chain broke. After carting it back up the coast in the back of a rental van, removing and rebuilding the engine, I swore I'd never take mechanical wear for granted. If only I'd popped the valve cover and taken a look at the chain, a good careful look, I would have noticed that it was shearing itself to pieces, one link at a time.

Don't be like me. Don't be out somewhere, a long way from home, and discover that you actually can't exceed X number of miles without maintenance.

I have seen this with many bikes on the lower end/entry level price range. Some come equipped with poorly sealed and under lubricated bearings.

As much as I dislike Specialized as a company, they are usually very well built right out of the box.
