Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Steve Rex is a very respected frame maker in No. CA. www.rexcycles.com He makes lugged steel frames with a variety of tubes to chose from.

i've bought and own several waterfords and they're sweet all the way around. recently though, i've been hooked on the bob jacksons. i've bought three of them in the last three months. they'll make anything you want at a price that will know your socks off it's so reasonable. but wait until you ride it. i have forgotton about the other bikes in the stable as i've been exploring these three 'triplets of pleaseure'. one is a fixie in with road geometry and a straight blade fork- it's relly sweet. it's got Pauls Components track dropouts that were sent to england to be used for the rear end. Some high flange promax hubs and i'm all over town. i got a road bike too- all paper thin 853 with velomax orion IIs on it with the dura ace kit and a Alpha Q Pro all carbon fork. the ride quality is unbelievable. finally, i picked up a vintage bob jackson touring bike in all origional condition. the paint is 9.5 out of 10 still.

my 2 cents worth: buy one and ride it. if you don't like it you can sell it and get all of your money back. (at least)!

cheers!

I know my best option probably is to find a used frame in good shape (difficult to do in my size). Just thought I'd see if anyone here had any ideas.

Thanks!
I haven't read through the replies so I don't know if they've been mentioned yet, but I just found Carrere bicycles. https://www.redroseimports.com/rri_carrera_aries_s.html
From their website "Carrera still builds traditional lugged steel frames the old fashioned way; one at a time. New improvements are low profile lugset and lighter Columbus Genius tubing. Handling and balance are superior due to proven geometry and perfect frame alignment. Beautiful artisan airbrush paint work compliments this frame."
Very nice.

Not 100% sure about that. The Carrera site doesn't say all the same things as the Red Rose site.

This is a 2004 lugged Volans which I can't see on the 2005 catalogue

Don't run red lights, wear a helmet, use hand signals, get some cycle lights(front and rear) and, FFS, don't run red lights!

Not lugged, but I like it anyway.

Bandaidman, you're fortunate to have the Tommasini importer as your LBS. They're almost unheard of (and rarely seen) over here in this part of Texas. I got my CarboFire off eBay from a guy just outside Nashville. Love it.
