I just started using the Zeroes this year. The float adjustment has been helpful in preventing my ankle from hitting the crank arm. I like the pedals so far, but I have only a few hundred miles on them.

man, i would highly recommend anyone considering speedplays to look at the bebop pedals. same idea, but in my opinion a better execution. I havent actually ridden the speedplays, but took really close looks at them all and their mechanisms, parts, and construction.
The bebops are nothing but metal (speedplays have quite a bit of plastic) and I've found the float can be semi adjusted by how you lubricate the cleat. No lube, and the cleat / pedal float is pretty stiff. After that, more lube = slicker float.
Speedplays want you to wear a cap to protect the cleat when you walk, don't they? Bebop guarantees that if you ever wear out the cleat by walking on it, they'll replace it for free. I can't see how that could happen, you've got about 2mm of steel to wear through.
And no, I'm not affiliated with bebop in any way. I just spent months agonizing over which pedal system to go with a long while back, and the bebops are just perfect.

I have found the Speedplay Zero's adjustable float to be very helpful since I can adjust inboard and outboard float seperately. As far as walking on the cleats, you really can't wear out the Zero cleats by walking on them. You can however clog them up with dirt and mud which is why covers are recommended. The Zero cleats are however more tolerant of debris than the X cleats due to them using a C-clip flat spring as opposed to a coat-hanger style spring. The Zero cleats are also all metal.

Since this is a speedplay post and all. Does anyone know where there is a place to get either the Zeros or the X plays for pretty cheap?
