I wave at everyone and everything: other bikers, trees, cars, dogs, squirrels, birds, clouds, airplanes, puddles, streetlights, stopsigns...my rides are so much fun now, except for the tendinitis in my waving arm!

I pretty much give everyone a small wave unless I'm droping the hamer.
That being said, I stay away from MUPs now. Too many idiots walking 5-wide with a stroller and horrible hearing, as well as runners wearing headphones trying to fill up the trail right down the middle. I only use a small, uncommonly used section of MUP now on my main ride and it's been super happy fun time every time I go out.

OP, you've inspired me. I am going to try my own experiment and go an entire MUP ride while no longer screaming obscenities at every person on the path.

I decided to wave at no one. Even if they waved at me I looked ahead and focused on my pace. I didn't worry about if I waved and they didn't wave back, I didn't care if I waved and they nodded. I didn't try to determine if they were likely to wave upon approaching them.
It was great. I had such a better experience. In the future, I will not wave unless I know or recognize you.

But you don't return the wave?

Waving at no one is an odd thing to do. The soccer moms on the MUP are probably warning their children to avoid the creepy guy that keeps waving with no one around. You should consider getting some help before you're reported to the MUP police.

I don't care how or if they respond. I find that very liberating. I have enough psychoses of my own. I try not to worry about the psychoses of others. I'm also not worried about yours.
We have a cabin out in the boonies. It's the custom to raise one finger off the steering wheel when meeting another vehicle. If you don't know the custom, you obviously don't belong there. It's kinda like having the proper fletching on your arrows.
