Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

My wife and I ride the streets and she gets pissed when we get passed unannounced.

I'm just glad to see her angry at someone else for a change...

goenrdoug : To me, morning Hi any greeting to alert is fine on places where it is a rule to alert ,

Off topic a little, there is a breezeway connecting several building where a work people often lock there bikes there. as it is under cameras too I noticed a Bianchi setting against the rail . As it was the first one I had seen I stopped to check it out . they had black electrical tape over the head badge and every name decal like that would keep some one from realizing it was a nice bike

Do you also say "excuse me" every time e you walk past someone? Honk at every car you pass on the road?

You know what? Life is just too short and sweet to get your knickers in a knot over the fecundity of idiots.

Yours is the only behavior you can control. Don't let others do it for you.

I completely agree with this rant! People who do this are just plain annoying. If people are riding side by side, I wiil of course say on your left, but when someone is riding by themselve, it is expected that they ride on the right. Apparently this is too hard of a concept for some people. Or they are just mad because a guy wearing a t shirt and basketball shorts just passed them at 20+ miles per hour on a bike from 1972.

Well, in full disclosure - I'm using caffeine again and possibly a little more irritable than normal or it maybe just gives me more of a hair trigger under my general living conditions. I don't go out looking for ways to make 'cyclists' look bad, but I'm not looking to be a cycling role model either. I think personally there is a little too much of this burden that everyone is expected to be some sort of ambassador of cycling to the world or something and I don't claim to be an ambassador for cycling really. I'm already judged for enough dumb stuff that I should never be criticized over in the first place.

I might have actually expected more backlash on here for ranting on this, but I might guess that I'm speaking for others who feel more inclined to try to be the aforementioned ambassadors of cycling. I don't really mind being the one to say it here or to the dorks who think they need to scold me out riding.

If it's not clear - I get it, ok? I realize that it's to my benefit to announce myself and I try to when I sense there is a hazard due to conditions. That doesn't mean every single slow cyclist gets a personal announcement that I'm about to blow past you. I blow past a lot of you out there. I get blown past too and not everyone announces it and I don't cry about it when they don't. I feel more ashamed that I'm getting passed usually than feel some nerdy compulsion to scold somebody over the etiquette of cycling.

There have been incidents where I have been lucky that I didn't get turned in front of too and I would have been at fault if I rammed them. I can think of at least two such occasions, but I've also ridden about 3,800 miles this year so far mostly on the MUTs around here and I suppose it goes with the territory to some degree and I've learned from those incidents - which were at intersections btw when people were turning and I didn't expect it and I was about to roll past them.

Haha, the whole thing was a joke as thats the craziness you hear in the hot r not threads, but some people are so uptight about their bikes it's hard to have any fun.

Obviously, how can an entry level frame with early 2000 tribal style graphics not be hot. I mean, tribal tattoos were definitely the hottest tattoos.

This is why runners should run facing traffic, but for some reason they refuse to do so...

I have tentatively decided that this "rule" is no more than a policy, having no force or authority beyond that. And simply etiquette or courtesy at that. Since few of the other "rules" are generally followed, I don't really care about the self-appointed enforcers obsessing over one of them.
Still, it often seems like a strain to keep quiet; no one wants to capitulate, and the temptation is to bark back. But is there a way to respond to simply relieve the animosity? One might ignore them and just say "good morning" or whatever, but one isn't always feeling so cheerful or generous. Perhaps the next time someone tries to tell me how to ride, I'll just say "maybe next time!"

My rant is about how much it irritates me to have some ****** decide that he/she needs to remind me that I need to afford them the courtesy of announcing 'on your left.' This happened again today after I actually again did in fact announce 'on your left' but the person in question didn't hear me or wasn't paying enough attention. For starters I am able to determine when I feel it is warranted to announce myself and I attempt to do so accordingly. Is there oncoming traffic? Are there two people side by side taking up the entire lane that need to be reminded there are others riding too? Is someone obviously distracted and a potential hazard? I am guilty of this too and I appreciate the reminder if I do become distracted.

What sets me off is somebody who just wants to run their mouth like they are the hall pass monitor of jr high school or whatever their malfunction is feeling like they need to scold me over me not announcing myself to their satisfaction regardless if circumstances warrant it by my assessment.

Particularly if you're really slow and you're just out limping along at 10mph - get a grip on it! You're going to get your ass passed all day long by EVERYONE... it shouldn't shock you that you just got passed AGAIN! You're going to continue to get passed by EVERYONE who isn't going 10mph like YOU ARE.

Don't be shocked if you get a response from me that hopefully discourages you from ever barking orders at me ever again to announce 'On Your Left.'
