Why are a lot of road cyclists on the older side?

At 37, I don't consider myself old, but I appreciate seeing others my age and older out riding. I have moments when I think, "when will I not be able to do this anymore?" i.e. water skiing, running, ect. The "older" riders show me I may never have to stop. I hope to be doing this for a long time.

It may also be that your riding circles are dominated by older folks -- we tend to ride with people that are similar to us, age and ability-wise. I'm from a college town in the South, I'm 19 years old, and most of my friends ride. Bike delivery and mechanic work are seen as desirable jobs. Most of my friends have plans for bike tours eventually. The difference may also be that few are interested in racing, as the time and money commitment is very large and most are just in it for the fun of the ride.
