Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

NOS 2102 Jamis Eclipse

I'm interested in Steel Road bike. I found a NOS 2012 Jamis Eclipse for about $1900. It has an Reynolds double butted 853 frame, 10 speed Ultegra and Ritchey components. I think it weighs about 18 lbs.

Just wondering if this is good deal. If people that have this bike like it ect. I'm assuming its a good smooth riding bike. I'll be doing recreational riding mostly.

Is there a better newer steel bike out there for the same money? I'm riding a 2014 kestrel legend 105 right now.

Thanks,

You could buy a steel Ritchey Road Logic frameset for about $1,000, get the new 11 speed 105 group for about $350, and spend the remaining $550 on stem/post/saddle/bars (most of which you may already have in a parts bin) and a decent wheelset. If I wanted a new steel road bike in that price range, that's what I would do because I think the road logic looks great.

$1900 seems high for old 10-speed Ultegra, which is a significant step down from the 11-speed versions (or even 11 speed 105 IMHO), but other than that the Jamis Eclipse is a very nice bike.

For the record, I built my Road Logic 2.0 for around $2400 (including wheels), with full Ultegra and WCS level Ritchey Components.

EDIT: Although I'll point out that the wheels on my bike are nowhere near as expensive at the Ritchey Zeta's that come on that Eclipse.

Frank, follow this link to the Adrenaline page for the Ritchey Logic builds: https://www.adrenalinebikes.com/stor...oductid=132753

See #2 for the Ultegra 11-speed build at $1,699. How sweet is that? Plenty of room for some upgrades which are also listed.

BTW, I've never ridden the Logic, but the very similar Breakaway (travel bike) was the best riding steel bike I have ever owned.

Those build kits... is that in addition to the price of the frame, or is that for everything? That seems insanely cheap. I want one...

Bikes: Many bikes in three states and two countries, mainly riding Moots Vamoots, Lynskey R265 disc and a Spot Denver Zephyr nowadays

Ah, in that case it still seems more cost effective to buy everything a la carte and/or use stuff in your parts bin. You'd have to assemble it yourself but that's fun IMO. I'm not looking for a new bike but if I were, the Ritchey is very appealing for a non-race bike.

Kona has a new steel bike (Roadhouse) that looks interesting. No one seems to one yet. I think it will end up being aournd 2 grand.

Bikes: Gilmour road, Curtlo road; both steel (of course)

For the same price you can go custom with Doug Curtis:

.Curtlo Cycles - Handmade bicycles. Custom Mountain Bike, Road, Cyclocross, Tandem bikes

I LOVE my Curtlo...

I think I can build the Ritchey frame with 105 stuff and Ritchey components for $2100. But for $2199 I can but the Ultegra Titanium bike from BD. Hmm

It's not that it isn't race worthy, it's just that I already have a bike that fits that role and I'd rather crash my crabon Trek than a nice Ritchey. I have no illusions that carbon vs. steel or a half pound of weight would make any difference in my mediocrity one way or another.

Everyone I know that has that Ti Motobecane loves it, but still... I'd have to lean towards the 105 Ritchey just on cool factor. Either way you can't lose, I think.
