Assembly Bike eBay Parts - Bad Idea?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Assembly Bike eBay Parts - Bad Idea?

I am thinking about assembling a road bike from used eBay parts. Bad Idea? I know how to buy on eBay, and I know how to put a bike together. I just need a few special took, and to watch a few YouTube videos. The bike I want sells new for $2100, plus sales tax, total $2273, just too much money. Buying the frame may be the biggest challenge. I would appreciate your thoughts and experiences.

I've built up several bikes this way, all with great results. It's a great way to learn about different types of parts and how to maintain your own bike.

You can find many parts with little to no wear on ebay, but you need to make sure that you do your research, know exactly which parts you need, and have the patience to wait for them to show up online. Also, assuming you haven't ridden the frame before, you need to be familiar enough with frame geometry to know you will be satisfied with whichever frame you have your eye on.

Good luck!

If you going with the latest and greatest, buying an entire bike will likely workout better for you. But if you don't mind technology that is a few years old, ebay parts would be a good option.

You can build a DA rig for a fraction of the cost new, for the mid and lower end groups the price can be had for even lower.

Then again you can get a set of new 105 11's in the 400-500 range, the new Tiagra 10's 4700 is a complete group for 350.00.

The only downside, with an ebay venture, you will need to know your exact frame size. I am hesitant with ISP frames. Once you have that figure out the rest is just hunting down the group / wheels you want.

Dont skimp on the cable/housing they will make a big difference in the bike over all mechanical performance.

All good advice, especially older tech.

Great deals on NOS stuff on the 'bay, and if something you buy turns out not to fit or work the way you hoped you can turn around and sell it...
