How is that even possible? Who would have allowed two separate groups on the track at the same time -- GOING OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS?

Wow....at first I couldn't figure out where the other (red/white) rider came from. Crazy , crazy ....race!

What seems to have happened is that the leading group, possibly through an error by marshals or the driver of the lead vehicle, deviated from the race route shortly before the finish line, reports.....
They then came round a bend to approach the finish arch from the wrong direction – just as the second group was sprinting for the line, and with disastrous consequences.

The lead group were somehow misdirected so that they ended up coming into the finish area from the opposite direction just as the second group were sprinting for the finish from the correct side. Either the lead car or marshals are supposedly at fault.

This Chinese video news report (link is external) on the incident shows the crash and its aftermath from a number of angles. What seems to have happened is that the leading group, possibly through an error by marshals or the driver of the lead vehicle, deviated from the race route shortly before the finish line, reports China.org.cn (link is external).
