They had a very specific problem with all the added attention and people wanting to leave food, water, etc. along the trail for riders. Basically a strategically placed piece of trail magic. Trail magic is more like "My tire got cut, but I ran across a local guy riding on the trail who gave me his tire" sort of thing, rather than spot watchers camping along the route for their favorite riders and trying to give them stuff.

I hear you on the increased popularity of bikepacking. In general, lots of folks don't understand LNT and really haven't understood it for years. It's kind of a catch 22. You want people to get involved outdoors and see that it's important and that camping and cycling have benefits, but you also want to keep out the morons, which is practically everyone.

for all the people that rely on planned trail magic, theyre just not strong enough to contend with the race as it is, so it doesnt bother me.
i just worry about the morons like you said, lol

For me, that's what it mostly came down to. No way in hell the front runners were going to do anything underhanded to risk a disqualification, but the internet jockeys were always ready to pounce on people they suspected might not be following the rules and it always created drama. One group of people came from Italy, if I recall correctly, and people were griping daily about how it was supposed to be an "individual" event, but they were riding *gasp* together. Those people were just there to have fun! People on the forums made a bigger deal of it than was necessary.

To me, it's kind of like a triathlon event now. There will be serious contenders and then there will be people there only racing themselves, and that's totally fine. As long as they're not sh***ng on the trial, right?

The most entertaining one was a few years ago when the record holder, who was a regular poster on that forum, kept making lots of sideways remarks about the two front runners because they were riding so closely together for the last half of the course. Made the guy seem really petty and jealous because they were threatening his record.

So, he expected one to just hold back for awhile to let the other get a nice big lead? Silly people.

I always imagine it would be crit, CX, and even road racers who are more accustomed to events where people clean up after them and all that matters is riding bike fast. They get out into the sticks and don't even know how to take care of things out there.

Yeah... pretty sure that's called "racing".

Went for a ride today after work and forgot the Garmin. It's nice to not look at the numbers sometimes and just ride. I need to do that more often.

I never have a device on my bike. More fun that way.

It needed to be locked since it was going south quickly with little chance of recovery.

A thread in the 41 goes south? Unpossible! Inconceivable even.

But then how do you know how much fun you had?

sry i just caught this, the route is here (minus a few miles of torture in Ringwood when garmin bonked out)

most of them are before we got to Ringwood since it was dark at that point and very rough going

Do any of you mopes know anything about violins and violas? Information beyond...it is a string instrument played with a bow is helpful.

Clown 2 has decided that she wants to play the viola. She has been using a borrowed instrument to play in the junior high orchestra.

while i dont recall anymore what makes a good violin/viola good, i played both from 4th-9th grade. i was much better at viola, i went from last row violin to first string viola

pieces for viola are more of a "rhythm guitar" bent, and violin can be lead or rhythym, but is generally more difficult

dunno if that helps anything, i tried.

That helps. I never knew those different characters of the instruments. I was looking on line trying to figure out what are good brands and what are junk. I may look into renting one for a while to see if she is going to stick with it. If she does, then maybe buy her one. It looks like decent beginner instruments are in the $200 to $400 range including the instrument, bow, case and some rosin.

I hear Guarneri is pretty good.

i was in public school that assigned us instruments from school, then rented one for a year till i decided i wanted to suck at guitar instead. i would concur with the rental

another thing worth noting is that if she already plays an instrument with music written in the treble clef (as most instruments are), the transition to music written in the generally alien alto clef can be difficult (it was for me at least, it took me a while to get used to it)

and more confusing is sometimes the viola even has parts in the treble clef. that was fun.
