There is a local ride in Dallas that is called the south ride, but it usually refereed to by the people that ride it at the south race. It's a Sunday morning beatdown. I would be destroyed if I attempted it. It's full of current crit racers and sometime earlier this year they actually broke the strava record for the route at 25.5 mph for about an hour and 48 minutes.

Oh boy.
in the summer it's full of ay carrammba boys from NYC who bomb red lights, which leads everybody else to chase them, which makes the ride far more hazardous than is necessary. You'll need an interpreter on that ride between May and October. It's like the Washington Heights friggin Vuelta.

Damn, 25+ is fast (for me at least) for a closed-course crit for under an hour. They're doing that over 46 miles on open roads with stoplights, cars, ect. Our local "racer boy" group rides end up averaging around 21 when you take into account a couple of regroups and dealing with lights/signs. I would do absolutely 0 pulling on that Dallas ride and I'd still be spat out the back at some point.
That's the real problem with a lot of fast group rides. They're always on public roads, and testosterone is just too big of a force to contain. There is a regular shop ride from the Dallas shop I worked at/build bikes at that goes to White Rock Lake. I lived in Arlington, so I wasn't usually able to stick around for the post work ride, but the few times I did make it, it was pretty brutal. And the worst part is that while most of the route was on lightly traveled roads around the lake, there were a couple of parts where we had to use MUP's to get from one side to the other and these guys would NOT slow down. So we ended up being the typical a-hole cyclists blowing past people with baby strollers, etc. Kind of the other major reason I rarely made the ride. With my injury and the new job, moving, kid on the way, I am SO far off my cycling game, it's not even funny. Hopefully when things settle down after Christmas, I'll start to get back in the swing of things. I'm hoping that next winter I can test the waters with some CX, since I have the perfect bike now, and maybe by spring of 2017, I'll be able to attempt the faster weekend group rides. |
Name brand smokes are about $8.50 here and $5.00 across the river.

I definitely need one of these for wrenching on bikes!

I'm on the "young" side of things and first went to college in the "aughts' (early 2000's). I remember going to parties and later bars where people would be smoking like it was the 50's and I'm just thinking, "You know this is bad, right? I mean, not morally, but smoking has a big impact on your health, and we know this now."

Same age range and same experience, but I did go to college in New Orleans where nobody gives a shizz about doing things that don't kill you. I still have t-shirts that smell faintly of cigarettes from nights out there.

wonder what these guys were smokin in college

I smoked from 1993-2007.

Geez, just thinking about it a little bit more, I realized that it was super popular to hang out in front of the dorms and smoke. You only have to be 18 to buy cigarettes, which is basically every college freshman. Then again, the people I knew who smoked out front were probably the types who were smoking before they were 18.
Plus, a lot of girls (and some guys) used smoking to help keep their weight down, which is all kinds of stupid. I can't think of anything less attractive than cigarette breath and teeth. |
i never understood that. when i smoked (10 yrs) i was 210lbs. i stopped and dropped down to 165 in less than a year, then few years later bikes happened and lost another 15
whats smoking supposed to do to keep you skinny? introduce you to friends with cocaine? |

New referral: uncontrolled epilepsy x 2 years.
Dog is on an inadequate dose of seizure medication, given at the wrong dosing schedule. I explain this and what the correct dose should be and how we calculate the minimum dose based on the dog's weight. I say the words and also write them down on a piece of paper. Owner is confused, so I say them again and point to the words I have already written on the piece of paper. We do this several times. Finally, the owner expresses concern because I am doubling the dog's dose of seizure medications. I know, because the previous dose was inadequate and being given too infrequently. That's why his seizures have been uncontrolled x 2 years. I say this and also point at the words I wrote down on the paper. Owner would like to negotiate the dose- give him more than he's getting now but less than I suggest. I explain again how we figure out the dose and what it should be and that giving him less than the effective dose but more than he's getting now will also likely be ineffective. Owner takes the piece of paper and says she will think about it. :bang: |
^^ Some people shouldn't be allowed to have pets.

I guess if the goal is to not pay any taxes at all they could just close down shop completely and get a job at McDonald's. ...or they could just live with the fact that when you have two successful restaurants and make a lot of money you also have to pay the piper. Maybe that's what I'll present to them. You can: A) Live off of $30,000 for your family of 5 or B) Live off of $300,000 after paying $150,000 in taxes |
Owner didn't hear what the owner wanted to hear, so the information given was obviously incorrect.
