Very true, but so is this: if one IS concerned with leading edge performance, there's plenty of others to choose from. And that is a very positive situation, wouldn't you say?

Well just like in any dog pack, there's only one top dog. Everybody else is just waiting for him to make a mistake.

Guess I underestimated the wind a bit:

I just went through the touch pad vs. mini laptap choice. Trying to weigh out the pros and cons, I ended up with the laptap. Just depends on what you plan to use it for. It folds back so I can use it as a touch pad if desired. I like a real keyboard when typing more than a few words. The touch pads have come a long way.

You left out a couple of things: 1) The winds were so high on the other side of the river that they blew over an eighteen-wheeler and, yes, I realize a semi is a lot less aero than two cyclists on even a heavy tandem. 2) We had an excellent breakfast at Mama's Kitchen which included catfish, eggs, and grits.

I think the Greyhound may be reaching her final days. She's had a good life. She raced, won one, had several seconds and thirds. Since retirement, she has had a good home where she is cared for, given attention and been safe. But, at 13 years, 8 months, she seems to have some health things going on that we can't figure out. My only hope is that she goes painlessly and in peace.

Nice kitten Herbie. We should have an Addiction kitten-naming contest.

Thanks.

Over the weekend she was hobbling, favoring her right back foot. That seems to be straightened out and she seems to be walking fine now. About a month and a half ago she seemed to have a seizure of some type. But after a few minutes she was fine. Lately, she dribbles when she pees.

That sucks.

Our Lab will be 15 in March. He's had some rough stretches since around 13 (bladder infection, laryngeal paralysis and chemo for an enlarged prostate within a year). He's going pretty well lately... slower, but going. I value every minute and don't look forward to having to make a decision that I will likely need to make.

I visited a friend's house recently and saw this on her wall, so I just HAD to have a pic. She has three Corgi.

Thanks.

We've been careful with her. She doesn't seem to have a urinary tract infection. She doesn't whine when peeing and the vet didn't find anything. She just seems to have no pressure.

Other than the seizure, I would wonder about a pinched nerve in the lower back. Dogs with "sciatica" can limp like they have an orthopedic problem & the same area of the spine controls urinary continence, so those symptoms often go together. The most common cause would be lumbosacral disease which is basically a disc herniation in the lower back. But a spinal tumor could look exactly the same. Or a meningitis but this would be less common.

A seizure (if that's what happened) is always generated in the brain. Sometimes it could happen because of a systemic disease (like low blood sugar or liver failure) having a secondary impact on the brain. Sometimes it's due to a brain problem and in an old dog a brain tumor is most likely. But also meningitis/encephalitits. A tumor on the left side of the brain could cause stumbling or tripping in the right hind leg. But typically not dribbling urine.

A muscle spasm from a pinched nerve could sort of look like a seizure in some way, so maybe it wasn't a seizure.

If all the easy things- bloodwork, urine culture, spinal X-rays, liver function test- are normal, sometimes I will empirically try steroids and a medication called gabapentin (for neuropathic aka "pinched nerve" pain) to see if it helps. Steroids are the strongest anti-inflammatory medication for a pinched nerve. They also frequently help if there's a brain tumor.

If you really wanted to know, you'd probably be looking at MRI studies of the brain & lumbar spine and maybe a spinal tap. But none of that makes much sense in an elderly greyhound, so symptomatic treatment is really probably your most realistic option.

Herbie53 12-21-15 07:27 PM

Jake before all of that... Christmas 2013... he can't sing now, so we avoid this commercial as not to piss him off.

Doug28450 12-21-15 07:29 PM

Nuts...

I made a mistake. It was the left leg that she was favoring. But, she is fine on it now. I noticed her fist favoring it on Friday. By Sunday she was getting along okay on it.

Heathpack 12-21-15 07:29 PM

Worth stating that the steroids will make her drink more, which then would make her urinate more, so if they didn't help with urinary continence they could make the urinary symptoms worse. Ie greater urine volume + same degree of incontinence = more dribbling.

When you say it "seems" there is no urinary tract infection be advised that there's only one way to know for sure- a urine culture. Sometimes vets will just check a urinalysis to look for micriscopic evidence of white blood cells and bacteria. But without a negative culture, a urinary tract infection cannot be ruled out and the culture is 100% indicated in a dog with urinary incontinence.

Doug28450 12-21-15 07:33 PM

The "seizure" was odd. We were playing with her in the yard. Playing the chase game. Suddenly, it appeared as though her back legs were not working. She fell over. She tried to pull herself up. the the back legs were not working. After a minute or so of her lying on her back, with us calming her, she got up and walked as though nothing happened.

Why do you have so many spacers under the stem?
