Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

T-boned a car @ 31 mph ...

People were real pushy tonight, on my a** everywhere.

I was just minutes from my destination, car in front, one riding me from behind.

This complex has giant water fountain round de rounds.

I took the left side [done many times].

What i didn't know was car in front was making a left circle behind the fountain where i couldn't see him.

I had a split second to hit a curb head on with a concrete mounted bench or bang off the car.

I hit the brakes hard at 30 mph but didnt slow much.

*** Fortunately the car broke my fall .....[lol]

First to hit was front wheel, somehow went airbourne and landed [hard] on my left hip facing backward.

Some guy getting off work that saw it gave me a ride home.

Left hood was out of whack, stem needed adjusting, front wheel needs a slight true.

Other than that i seem okay.

Walking tomorrow may not work but beats the E-room.

Carbon bikes can take a licking but i don't want to do that again.

Thats the 4th time in my life. I'm not getting any younger.

You know you're going to catch flak for the 31mph bit, right?

Just no name-calling.

So you were riding around a water fountain at 30mph, hit a car at 31 so it seems you sped up on impact, only bike damage was a front wheel slightly out of true (after a 31mph collision) and a stem and hood that need adjusting? And no damage to you? And you still needed a ride home?

My hip is killing me and i had 2 people offer me a ride.

It's a good thing i took up the second guy because im having a hard time bearing weight on my left side and there were alot of steep hills coming home.

What happened here? The way I read it the op went the wrong way around a roundabout and rode into the side of a car turning left on said roundabout. Is that right?

Let me get this straight.
You were in a 2-lane roundabout, cruising at 30 mph, and managed to side-swipe a car? Or did you rear-end a car?

I will admit that sometimes decorative features do reduce visibility.

We've got one local mid-sized roundabout, and all the others are pretty small. I take it at about 20 mph to try to keep up with traffic. While it is difficult to completely avoid that roundabout, I tend to organize my rides so that I'll either do a 90° (right turn), or 180° (straight through) path. I avoid doing a 270° route through it. The tricky part is to do a right turn, and end up on the median strip. There is also a stop or yield to get into the roundabout, so I can never be at full steam going through it.

Anyway, be vigilant, and don't ride faster than conditions or visibility permits, even if you're shaving a few milliseconds off of your Strava record..

I'm a bit confused too. A google map, and/or hand drawn diagram can always be handy.

To state the obvious, I think it means nobody here believes YOU were doing 30.

You almost have it right. You left out the part where he intentionally went around the roundabout the wrong way. Considering how much about this story is bizarre it is understandably hard to assimilate it all. I'm just happy I could help out to complete the tale.

Ding. Ding. Yes, that is correct. He intentionally went the wrong way around the circle and then was shocked...shocked I say...to find a car coming the other way around. The nerve of the other driver. What could he have been thinking?

OP must think he is riding in the TdF where the peloton splits going around circles. That would explain his speed too.

Did he go the wrong way around it? Or did he just take the left hand lane?

Or is it one of those odd 2-way (Magic/Swindon) roundabouts that they apparently have in Europe?

i'm thinking it was km/h. and OP is a loser for going the wrong way around a rotary; as he is in so many other aspects of his life.
