Plenty of obvious 41 fodder; the kid clearly needs to htfu to get up the hill, or at least should switch to a compact. But not a triple.

He needs clipless pedals to spin down the descent, and disc brakes in the wet conditions.

And he should be carbloading on the bread before his ride, not after.
