Black Bikes?

I have a new Gunnar Sport with custom geometry being built and spec'd black as the color. Anyone out there that has any pros or cons to living with black bikes? I am generally dont like black for a car color as there are so many of them, but on bikes it is a bit less common and touch ups should be pretty easy.

The car wash brushes leaves swirl marks in the black paint. Make sure that you only ride through the touchless car wash.

Black rokks !!
Something about the pigment makes it look good for a long time
and not be prone to problems that plague other colors over time,
it just shows road dust very soon after cleaning it. Ive had a
lot of black bikes and motorcycles and Ive found a straight
Carnuba type wax(NO cleaners or polishes) applied in a straight,
non-circular motion keeps it looking good. If you have a Honda MC
dealer close by they make this great spray on stuff that you can
use in between serious wax jobs.

Good luck with the new rig ! :D

what do you do about the areas where your legs cover tubes in carwash? I just carry a chamois and wipe them off. Does anyone use the full service and let the attendant dry the bike, armorall the tires and vacuum out your wedge pack?

Good call. This is great stuff. I use it for all sorts of things. Google "Honda spray polish" and see all the recommendations from people and dealers alike. BTW, disregard anything to the effect that it's just repackaged Pledge furniture polish - that's rubbish!!

I love my black bike. Other parts needed for the full blackout though.

Hey that's mine! I have that exact frame. I love it. I got some Looks a couple months ago and when I got them they matched EXACTLY, silver lettering an all. It looks great and it rides better.

Can't we all just get along? Why's it always got to be a color thing?
:D

My black bike is not painted - it's anodized, so the "color" actually is right in the top few microns of aluminum. I love it. It's black matte, won't scratch or wear out, and doesn't weigh the few ounces that paint does. The logos and brand name are laser-etched into it.

Black is an impressive color for a clean bike. To each his own, but everyone knows that black is the fastest color for a bike.

I have an old black Fuji Ace, I call Black Beauty. My other bike is a bright Yellow Carbon frame called "Mellow Yellow".

Holy crap....nice Pinny!

Had a Gunnar Roadie in basic black. Just recently had it redone in metallic purple. In black, it was as boring as a bike could be. So boring that I was ashamed to ride it. Looks so much better in purple.

I have found that black bikes get pretty hot in the summer, but that could be because we HAVE summer here.....'less'n you think it is the "broil" setting on the oven.

I fear death. (and spilling my blood in general)
When bicycling I like to be seen.
Stealth does not get me around a 4,000 lb car at an intersection.

I have a yellow Kestrel Talon, and use yellow Conti tires.
I wear high visibility yellow, red, and gold jerseys.
I wear a yellow helmet.

Many of my after work rides go into dusk.
I would not purchase a black frame.

wannaride 05-04-05 08:21 PM

As a motorcyclist for 20 years, I share in the thought that black is the hardest color for motorists to see. My motorcycle and bike are both bright red and I have brightly colored helmets for both.

I'm frankly more concerned about getting hit by a car on my bike than my motorcycle and I wear bright jerseys and keep my helmet light flashing at all times.

I'll wear black to my funeral.
