Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Squeaky Looks

I have a pair of Look Keo Classics on my road bike and lately they have been squeaking. I checked to make sure they are tight on the crank arms, and they are. I am using the gray cleats and they seem to squeak as they rub against the pedals, when I move my foot.

Does anyone have a remedy for this?

Thanks.

The body of the cleat can make that noise when it rubs on the floor of the pedal. A squirt of water from your bottle is a quick, but very temporary fix. New cleats have those rubbery pad that isolate the cleat body and prevent the problem. Maybe your cleats are a little worn.

One other possible problem is that the needle bearings are loose in the pedals. You can feel that as play. The simplest fix for this is to open the pedals up and fill them with grease. Forget about trying to replace the bearings. It isn't worthy the extra trouble and expense. There is a plastic "wrench" tool for opening up some Look Keo cleats, but it is devilishly hard to find. Here are several listings for them on ebay.

Take a crayon or a candle and rub it on the hard part of the pedal where the pedal contacts the cleat. Do it now and thank me later.

I have a 1 gallon tub of vasoline next to my front door, I just dip the bottom of my shoes into that before I head out and I've never had any squeaks from my keo classics.
