Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Which wheelset

Debating wheelset, I'm about 220 and commute 30mi day year round:

Machine-built Archetype 32h 105 hub off Velomine (trued at LBS for 60): $280

vs.

Custom 32/36 Archetype 105 hub off PowerWheelbuilder: $400

Check hubs, spokes, and rims. If all are the same, I'd go for the $280 version. I suppose if you pay an additional $60 (for the pair?) for tensioning, that brings you up to $340, and you still save $60.

Are the "machine built" wheels truly machine built? Or are they just machine assisted?

Anyway, if they are using name-brand spokes (DT, Sapim, etc), I'd go with the cheaper ones.

If they use generic spokes, skip it.

From another thread: "Velomine's wheelsets are machine built by Wheel Master in Miami, who currently have a very good stock of Archetype rims on hand." 280 would include the truing if needed. Thanks!
