Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

It's resistance. The stronger you get the less it hurts. Just reach down and grab a pair instead of sniveling about it.

Naw, still hurts....you just go a bit faster, until the wind blows harder then maybe you're able to hold the same speed.

I've herd that before.

Never noticed it on mine, but then the rear rim cracked so I no longer have to worry about it...

No fan of the wind here either but I have to deal with it almost daily. I live on the coast and a large portion of my riding is along a seawall totally exposed to the wind. On really windy days I try to make a deal with it by doing circuits. I have an 8.5 mile loop where half of it is on the seawall and then loop inland for the second half. I choose the direction of the loop based on the wind direction. I go for a tailwind on the seawall and deal with the headwind a bit further inland where it's much less pronounced. Of course a lot of the time it seems like I just can't get it behind me and the crosswinds are the worst.
I do my intervals on the seawall because there is no vehicular traffic and it is wide, flat and long. Generally I alternate directions, with and against the wind. Used to drive me crazy and on really windy days I would bag it and do them on the trainer. Doesn't bother me as much since I started training with power. Just trying to maintain a steady power output with and against the wind has become kind of a game for me and I don't worry about speed or heartrate. Even so no matter how you slice it riding in the wind sucks.

A 15-20mph head wind is preferable to a steep climb, might not be going much faster but at least I'm still spinning.

Was it Greg Lemond who remarked that it doesn't get easier; you just get faster.

I live in a windy place, and one way to work might suck, but the other way is usually a blast.

Hey, a thread I can identify with. The past two days have been tough here, 30-40 mph with higher gusts. For the most part, they come from the west, or NW, SW so I try to pick routes primarily north to south. Of course, that's just general. At some points I still end up dealing with the wind pretty much head on. I'm trying to think of it as a "different workout", good for me , gear down and lower my head.

Every year there will be a TdF stage (usually in the first week) that's flat and windy. And every year a potential GC contender will get caught out in a cross wind, get gapped, and be in danger of losing big chunks of time. I love those stages.

welcome to my world... past week been on the trainer indoors because of constant winds everyday between 15 and 40 mph....

4 to 5 hours on the trainer can get a lil' boring, and I enjoy being outside far more, but the fact is this; wind is the one element of nature that i can't deal with... snow, sure, as long as it's not on the road, rain, been there, and I can do it, it's challenging and kind of dangerous, but I can deal, extreme heat, that's a breeze man, but wind that's over 10 mph and constant and coming from every direction... nope.. it's just not worth it...

My mantra on windy days: The wind is your training partner.

I know, I know, but it beats pissing and moaning, and riding indoors...

Funny this thread coming up, I just got back from a 22 mile jaunt in very high winds - 50mph gusts - and while I too consider it just part of the workout, it does get old after a while. Great when it's at your back, but crosswinds and headwinds are a real buzz kill.

A friend of mine says wind is your friend, it helps you train when it's from the front and makes you go faster when it's from the back... but the real reason is you'd better be his friend, because he's stronger than you and will beat you everytime if you confront him.

One thing about the wind, here the prevailing wind is NNE tradewinds, but now and then we get shifts and it makes a route entirely different. But the other day we had a cold front come through (meaning rain in SoCal a couple day later) with pretty gusty winds that were blowing a lot of crap around and I got double flatted from thorns. Fortunately I left the thorns in place and made it home with no problem and could pull them and patch at leisure with the bike in the stand.

Big winds on my commute a few weeks back...steady 30 mph with gusts of 60+....almost got knocked off my saddle from a sidewinde gust. Worst part was that the wind, which would have been a strong tailwind on the way home, had died down and shifted directions after work, so no reward ride that day!
