Why are there so many cyclists with potbellies?

You're the most interesting man in the world. If you want to impress me then go get in a firefight with the Taliban, lifting weights for a few minutes won't do it. Just chill, dude.

I don't see too many pot bellies on podiums. I think they are rare indeed for serious racers. I do see a lot of pot bellies on fast riders. Fewer than in the general population though. So to answer the OP's question, we see a lot of cyclists with pot bellies because a lot of people have pot bellies. I see a lot of pot bellies in the gym. Probably on par with the general population. I did a 62 mile charity ride Sunday. A lot of people who appear less in shape than me rode away from me. Appearances are deceptive. Have fun with Google and "what causes pot belly?"

Here's a quick little test: dry out your poo and then light it on fire... if it burns, that's calories (even if it doesn't burn, there's still some left over). Eating a lot of fiber will expedite food progression through your gut, giving you less time to absorb the caloric content too.

I was just amused that it was presented like a little test that's easy to do at home.

As Stefon would say, this thread has everything. Wanton hyperbole, information disguised as nonsense, nonsense masquerading as information, pointless anger, flaming poop... 41 in a nutshell, y'all.
But doesn't stop me from wondering how long you have to dry a poo to get it burnable. Someone must know. The truth is out there.

Why are we burning poop now? You can polish a turd fyi, mythbusters did a thing on it. I want to give gifts of polished turds out to folks I don't care for.

I do notice cyclists and cycling groups that stop at coffee shops, for more than a quick bottle refill and bathroom break. Perhaps many of them figure that, since they've ridden an hour or two (regardless of pace), they deserve a pastry and coffee. However, as some have already pointed out, casual-paced cycling likely burns fewer calories, per hour, than walking. Throw in a post-ride "recovery meal" and you've got a calorie surplus.

Kinda like why not everybody has a 1000 lb squat & 600 lb bench.
How many of you so called 170 lb "cyclist" hit the gym consistently ?
I could take most of you in my gym with a 100 lb straight bar and within 10 to 15 minutes have you calling 911.
Stock cars & cycling in a circle is boring as ****.
I did a long ride with two Cat #1 dewds last Saturday, we weren't "racing" we were "riding" and we are friends.
Thats what cycling is about.

Not everything with cycling has to be about speed, calories, FTP, climbing, distance, and whatever other stuff people think is important.

Wouldn't you like to know.
We can make it 225 or 305 if u wish ...
I guarantee most of you can't handle 100lbs more than 10 minutes.
Just the fact that were talking about how other cyclists "look" when some here consider themselves semi Pro is pathetic.
Alot of u sound like teenaged girls.

If you think you're gaining something extra by waving a light bar around instead of trying to raise your 1RM you are sorely mistaken. Or depends what you want but you're not getting strength with that, just endurance.

I warm up with 360 so ...
I could have some of you girls don a 90 pound pack and run stairs for 10 minutes and have you crying.
But its important that you have a 32 inch waist around other cyclists to be symetrical.
And whats with those short cyclist anyway, and the Latin & European guys, who do they think they are.
And whats with all the : [enter bigoted discriminatory expletive here].

If we sat an endocrinologist, a nutritionist, a sports physiologist, and a psychologist down together to figure this question out, they'd come up with four factors lacking in the average person (who may be a rider): dietary knowledge, dietary discipline, exercise regimen, and goal orientation.
The rest, as they say, is in the details...

This site is about cycling, including all the joys and sorrows that go along with it. Some are skinny 135 pounders, other almost triple that. Some ride to be a wannabe racer, others for recreation and fellowship. While some are looking to lose weight, others might use the exercise to allow themselves a little treat afterwards.
It's all good and to each their own but one thing I doubt any one here rides their bike so they can go to the gym and lift 300 lbs..... that sort of mentality is just ridiculous on this site. Peddle that craziness on a gym rat site because frankly my dear, "we don't give a dam" and really are not impressed with the claims. I'm glad that it works fr you but don't come here pounding your chest.
Back to the topic, anytime I gain a little weight, it's in my belly area. Not too bad, but noticeable. I think it is all in proportion to a persons waist size and height, but if you want to lose belly fat, then you need to lose weight...... there is no secret shortcut. My belly distends a little but not enough to prevent me from getting low in the drops and riding hard.
