Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

In the thread, he states that he rides it 3 times per week and that this bike has ~40k miles on it.

I think it's pretty cool, but on the roads I ride I feel like I would break it pretty quickly.

He says it has about 40,000 miles on it. He lives in Las Vegas, and says anyone there can ride with him anytime.

I just skimmed the thread, looking at things about the parts. I evidently missed it, thanks.

That's pretty neat, but a bit obsessive for my tastes… I'm just happy that I beat 7.38kg without much effort at all.

I was wondering, about the durability of such a light weight setup. Not that I see anything wrong with having something like that mostly for display and showing off but having something special and still using it regularly adds just a bit to story.

What's with that bar tape? It looks like someone painted the side of the brake hood with Benjamin Moore latex paint and a cheap brush.

And those pedals...???

I'm sorry, but no. Just no.

From a linked thread -

The tape I have used most often, and the tape on the bike now, is actually the "backing" tape from a roll of insulating tape that I bought at ACE hardware. It is 2.5 cm. wide, ( 1 inch). It has the right amount of stretch to it, just like regular bar tape. 12.2 grams for the complete handlebar including a little extra padding at the top of the lever hoods. I stocked up on it years ago, not sure if they still have it.

Lol. I'm actually not much for heavy padding, either, but tape as thin as his would probably take some getting used to. In any event, it brings him joy and he uses the hell out of it, so I'll just admire his dedication.

Agreed... doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. If it works for him, more power to him.

It's less than admirable if that same ethic doesn't extend beyond his own bicycle, but I'll grant that the dedication and results are sort of inspirational.

That bike must not be that durable. A crash would nearly destroy it? Am I correct? Basically, I would not want to ride that bike, it would be destroyed pretty quickly!

When you purchased your bike was that your initial concern--that if I crashed the bike it's going to be destroyed, so I'll get the heavier one?

No. Just saying because it is so light. I would not go for a very heavy bike either. I would go with the lightest I can afford

Did you read when it was actually made? And how miles it actually has been ridden?

The answers are 9 years ago, and 40,000 miles.

Yes to the experiment with the spray rubber on the hoods. Now he is using the thumbs from work gloves.

So it actually is pretty durable because it has lasted that long.
