Paketa Magnesium Frames?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I prefer unobtainium. It's lighter, much more expensive and much more difficult to find in large enough quantities to build a bike out of. It is the preferred material for the well dressed OCP.

Ah yes, unobtainium is way better and should be on every OCP's must have list!

Magnesium needs to be brought up to the melting point before it ignites. You can place a blow torch to a frame and it will not burn. The smaller the piece the easier it is to ignite.

Right, and supposedly the alloy used by Paketa doesn't oxidize as "badly" as what we normally think of.

As for Mg fires. Yes, VW bug crankcases were made out of them. Most people consider them better than the aluminum cases, HOWEVER, engine fires are somewhat common on older cars (old fuel lines, etc - idiotic things). The difference between and old an Chevy (with like, a cast iron crankcase) is that once that engine fire gets hot, the crankcase will go up. I've seen it happen and within minutes the entire car was quite literally reduced to almost entirely ash.

The alloy has nothing to do with the oxidizing .. if its properly coated, it will resist. Mine has now 2 yrs and there is no apparent sign of it. I will diassemble for the winter and do a visual, but my guess is that I will find nothing ..btw Mg is currently used in the aviation .. worried now ???

What about magnesium rims? Know anything about the American classic mag wheels for road bikes?

Magnesium frames. What, isn't carbon or aluminium or scandium light or stiff enough?

A solution in search of a problem.
