Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Here are some pictures from the Joe Martin Stage Race in Fayetteville, Arkansas that took place this weekend.

Friday started with a road race for the Pro 1 and 2 categories of men and women (i think it was 64 miles for the women, 110 miles for the guys, check the link to the race site for more accurate details).

Saturday started in the morning with a road race, and finished up with an individual time trial up from the bottom of Devils Den (i think it was 2.5mi, avg grade of 6.8%-- some short sections well over 10% though).

I watched the end of the road race on Friday, but had to spend Saturday on yard work (bummer!). Forgot the camera on Friday.

But Sunday was the best spectator day by far, got some cool schwag, some free Jelly Bellies from their booth, good times, and a bit of a sunburn (it was freakishly bright, as some of the photos show). Remembered by camera this time!

Anyway, it was a great time. Seeing those pros just go nuts all over town was amazing, inspiring, and a little intimidating.

BTW, all the race results and some additional photos should be posted on the race site, linked from my page.

Just thought you'd like to see the largest field for a USCF race in the States this year (140+ pro men, over 100 pro women).

Doh! left out the link. Here ya go:

Nice pictures of nice bikes! All the photos had the bikes centered in the middle of the picture; except this one.

hehe, that was the first pic i took, during the pro women's crit (got there just at the end of it) and I wasn't used to anticipating the lag tme between my digital camera's button and when it actually took the shot (plus they were hauling serious ass).

updated the site with a few videos, the quality is not the best at full screen, but if you make the window smaller it's acceptable.

enjoy!

those two guys took off about the second lap and were that far in front for the first 40 minutes (it was 85 min. + 5 laps) until they fell back or the field pushed up and they were absorbed back into the field. Their teammate, a Cuban named (going on phonetics for the spelling) Ivan Gonzalez, was at the back of the pack for the first half, but came up to the front near the middle and placed in the top 5 or so.

here's some linkage to the crit map/profile:

I got a nice picture of Healthnet rider holding onto the water bottle and getting a nice pull up "the wall" by the team van during saturday's road race. Funny how he started pedaling on his own after they saw me. Moninger of the Healthnet team ended up winning the overall by three seconds...
