Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Cassette Noise

So ive been trying to figure this noise and cant seem to figure it out.

When im in the small ring up front, the chain/cassette/deraillure makes no noise (outside of normal noise) however when shifted up to the big ring in front the rear get a bit noisy. Not crazy loud or anything just sounds mostly like normal operation noise but louder.

Its 5800 all around and the sound is louder in all gears in the rear when in the big ring up front.

Could this extra noise be due to the added tension from shifting to the big ring? Im having a hard time telling but i think it MIGHT be coming from the derailleur cog closest to the crankset.

Is this normal, or does anybody have any input?

Thanks!

I rode with a buddy today, and his bike made a God awful noise with each rotation of the crank, always at the same spot too. I said "lube your pedals" and he said that they wee almost new, hmmm!

After the ride, we took the R pedal off, lube the threads and reinstalled it. Then, just for giggles, lubed the pedal shaft and his clips too (yes we did the shoes as well).

We went out for a quick 3 mile hard ride, and the bike did not make a sound...noise gone.

Lesson, take something off the bike that you think is the problem, clean/lube it real good then reinstall. I would guess your chain is dirty, lacks lube or needs replacing.

Kinda hard to diagnose without hearing it, but here are a couple of things to check
Is the drive train clean and lubed?
It could be the rear der not quite in adjustment and chattering a bit. Try putting a little pressure on tne shift lever and see if the noise diminishes.
It could be the front der being a little out of adjustment and the chain rubbing on it.
If you can't figure it out, take it to a LBS for diagnosis.

Have a bike shop check the alignment of the front and rear derailleurs, and check the derailleur hanger alignment.

When on the large chainring (front) does the noise occur consistently through the full range of gears on the rear?

if it tends to make more noise when in the the lower rear gears, or the higher rear gears and quieter in the middle gears then it's probably a front dr adjustment. Look up the "trim" feature of your groupset. you may be just a flick of the lever away from curing the noise.

If its in all the gears, and the noise is truly coming from the rear, it could be that the rear dr is adjusted wrong. look at the dr from the rear and see how well it is aligned with rear cogs. turning the barrel adjuster slightly oneway or the other may bring it into alignment. If this is the problem, you most likely are also having consistently less than perfect shift performance either one way orthe other (meaning it shifts up well, but not down, or vice versa.)

Or go to the LBS.
