Getting my first bike tomorrow. What do you think?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I'm getting my first bike built for me tomorrow. An '05 Kona Jake for $750. I'm anxious to get on it and start riding. Although I'm new to bicycling, I'm pretty sure Road Cycling is the type of riding I'm mostly intrested in doing. The reason I wanted a Jake as opposed to a full fledged road bike was because I wanted the option to do some light trail riding also. The guy at the Bike Shop assured me that with a quick tire swap, the Jake is good for trails and asphalt alike. He said it had something to do with the slickness of the tires. It should be noted that I'm an American living in Germany; I don't speak German at all and my choice of Bike Shops is limited. I was hoping on getting some more experienced folks to weigh in on my decision for a first bike.

Thanks.

Was just reading a review online, looks great, cyclocross bike... I'd go for it, as it allows a bit more versatility, but still prefer my 700x23 low rolling resistance. The nice thing is that you could get a road wheelset and swap it from time to time with the ATB wheelset. Looks great...

Don't cyclocross bikes use road rims, or is the Kona an exception?

Go for it.....looks nice a more than adequate starter bike. I wouldn't mind having one myself for the canal towpaths around here.

Cheers,

Brian

How do I go about finding a suitable wheelset for when I want to do more road riding?

as a cyclocross bikeriding roadie, i can say you're making a great choice on a first bike. for now just get some nice 23-25mm road slicks and you're good to go.

A good choice. A very versatile bike.

You don't really need a better wheelset to do more road riding just get some high performance road tires if you want more speed.

Sounds like the bike shop you went to is OK. I agree with what he said.
