Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

First Group Ride

I have been back in the saddle for about 4 weeks now and decided it was time for my first group ride in 20 years. I had been very nervous about doing this as I did not want to slow down the group as there average is in the 18's and my average is around 15.5mph. All I can say is wow! What a great experiance. We only did 20 miles (evening ride) but it felt more like 5 miles. While during a normal solo ride I have to push really hard to keep my average in the fifteen's, I was able to average closer to 20mph in the group and it was a very easy pedal at that. The power of the draft I guess. Can't wait till the next group ride. Guess I better step up and pull next time before I wear out my welcome....... Thanks guy's

Congratulations. I also learning to ride better in groups. I tried a criterium last week and quickly realized I needed more group skills. Keep at it.
