Do you wave at other motorists when driving and expect them to wave back?

Not a big wave, but I did speak as well. Might be difficult for them to cycle while being both blind and deaf.

You may not be considered cool or hip enough to garner a wave. Perhaps you could adjust your cycling garmets to be more like the crowd you want to get waves from? I see nothing at all wrong with a 70 YO dude going out and getting some skinny jeans, a set of converse, black t shirt and flannel, and one of those funny flip bill hats to ride in....

OK, Mr. Senior Poster, I didn't say no one. I pointed out a particular segment. Just seemed to me that there are some that go out of their way to be noticeable, but fail to return the acknowledgement.

I'm a senior, 70, and have only been cycling for about three years. I ride three days during the week about 12 to 15 miles a day. Then, on Saturday, I typically do something a little longer. Also, I normally ride alone. I am normally a pretty friendly guy, but there have been many occasions where I have crossed paths with others that simply won't acknowledge you when you say Good Morning or something of that nature. It doesn't bother me much when it might be a big group in a pace line because they are typically about business. The ones that bother me are the groups of two or three wearing their little matching outfits, on their expensive carbon bikes, that can't be bothered to respond to some old codger just trying to stay alive and stay fit. Can you guys explain their rudeness to me?
The WORLD does not revolve around anyone in particular; any codgers, like you or I.
If you choose to 'greet' on your ride, expect nothing. It is your outreach and really forms no requirement on anyone else's part to respond.
If they choose to respond, that's their choice.
What you're bugged about is your feeling/perception that 'THEY' look down on you; because they ride in fancy kit on fancy bikes. Thatz your misperception, not their rudeness.
Ride your ride, do your thing; let others ride their ride and do their thing.

I usually wave or say "hello" when I pass a cyclist or pedestrian.
If coming from the rear, I consider a greeting a way to help them become aware of my presence.
I have had a couple of people in cars yell a greeting out of the window, then speed off, and I've wondered if perhaps they were pedestrians that I passed at 20 MPH with a greeting without allowing time for them to respond. Is that equally rude?
I don't worry when people don't respond. There are much more important things in the world to worry about.

I've been of more than a couple of job sites over the years and know what you mean, but was referring to people yelling at me on my bike. Was passed one day while in the middle of a climb by a pickup with some young guys in it and cigarette smoke just boiling out the windows, and they yelled at me to get the **** off the road old man. I was so proud of their parents.

how do you determine, on the few seconds you have to look, that a bike is made of crabon and not some other less assplossive material like aluminum or even steel? I sure as hell can't tell with just a glimpse but if there are some telltale signs then I would like to know so that I can make my aluminum bike appear crabon.
Sup.

Today I was in the airport in Chicago, and although I waved and said hello to everyone I saw, no one responded, except for some woman who threatened to call the cops.

Ah, another waving thread. I recall posting one last year when I was a newbie.
Here is my take on this subject, when I am involved in a serious ride, segment or climb.... I probably didn't even look at you. If I am simply out for some miles, I wave at everyone and could care less if they wave back. So, sometimes I am the offender and other times, the offended.
In the end, all that matters is that I got my ride in.

This is why I like mtb riding, everyone waves. If you are found trail side and not moving, people ask if you are okay.
If you have a flat, or other mechanical, they stop and help. That is better than a wave any day!

Something I've wondered:
When people mention 'those riders in their fancy crabon bikes,' how do you determine, on the few seconds you have to look, that a bike is made of crabon and not some other less assplossive material like aluminum or even steel? I sure as hell can't tell with just a glimpse but if there are some telltale signs then I would like to know so that I can make my aluminum bike appear crabon.

I don't know the average income on this forum. But I have heard what it is for cyclists. Mostly what folks ride is a choice (I said mostly). There was a very stupid time in my life 50% of what I earned went to bikes. I bought my TdF 753 the year I made about $10K. But bikes were my thing and I chose to spend money there. Anyone with the luxury to be out riding should not be complaining about others bikes. Now/later - I like to spend it on the kids's bike/s. I then (for me) and now (for my kid) am giddy with excitement over new parts and can't wait to get them tried and tested. Even if nobody is watching. My desk is full of parts - there for nothing but me to look at.

I would put forward for your consideration, this since OP didn't know about "the wave" post and frequency, that he could possibly have a life and be doing other things than the rest of us trolls.

I think it's the killer bud that is out there. Just about every cyclist I know tokes up before a ride. So the buzz, combined with effort of riding, equals zoned out riders. So that's why you don't get a response when you wave. Most guys are just too stoned.
And if it's a morning ride, man, not even awake, blaze up, start riding, gotta concentrate on not hitting the guys wheel ahead of me. I can't be waving or looking at someone across the road.
