Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Crank arm issue

Can someone point me to a product to fix my frustration. I'm putting my new bike together and just realized that my ultegra crank is a 165. Returning it is not an option. I'm 6'02 so the 165 won't work. Is there a way to replace just the arms or do I have to buy an entire crankset? Either I am way too frustrated to find the part or I am missing something. Either way, some guidance would be great. If it helps I need a 175.

You can change the crank arms only but I think you'll have a hard time finding a place that sells them without chainrings. Could check in ebay for used ones. You could also just try the ones you have, there's a good chance you wouldn't have even noticed.

I usually say don't bother when you're talking 2.5mm or so... but 165 to 175 is a significant jump, and noticeable. Instead of playing scavenger hunt on eBay, I'd just buy a new 175mm ultegra crankset and then sell your old one complete. If you're lucky you'll even make some money since 165 is a rarer size.

May need to compromise just a pubic hair's length on the size.

What model of Ultegra? Double, triple, or compact double? Is it for your Colnago CLX? If so, what year.

FYI I'm 6'1" and use 175mm crank arms on both my bikes. I'm more of a masher than a spinner so the 175 gives me a little more leverage.

Did it come new with the 165mm arms? If so, what size frame is it? Something like a 165 is usually for very small frames. Also couldn't you get the seller to exchange it?

Doesn't this have an integrated spindle/spider/right crank arm like many modern cranksets? If so, trying to replace "only the arms" is still replacing 80% of the crankset. Dump it off and buy a new one.

This. Order from the UK (Ribble, Chain Reaction, etc.).

Although your question has already been answered, have you thought about just giving them a try? Bradley Wiggins is 6'3" and uses 165mm cranks after many years of using 175mm cranks. If anything, you can probably easily sell/trade them for 175mm cranks since the market is shifting towards shorter cranks.

It's a double. My Colnago has a 175 on it and it's perfect. This is a new Kona Hon-y Tonk frame that I am building up from scratch. It's a 58 frame.
I am going to build it out and try it but I am frustrated with myself for not noticing it earlier. I have been sitting on the parts for a few months now and I should have caught it.

Especially good to try if you ever wanted to increase your RPMs-- but, if you do keep'm you will have to raise your seat an additional 0.393701 inches to maintain the same leg extension when the crank is at 6 o'clock.

I also suggest you give them a try. My primary bike has 175mm cranks, but another one has 165mm ones and some have 170mm. I switch back and forth and do notice a slight difference with the 165s, but it's very minor and I'm not really sure which I prefer.

Guess I'm in the minority but I'd sell the cranks and buy a longer set. They're too short for your height imo, and I think you will notice it.

I can get the entire crank for $150ish so $107 for just the left side is probably not going to work out well. Thanks for the advice though.

It is 6800 and this looks to be the case. Truthfully, I was so disguisted when I realized it that I put it down and walked away for awhile. I will look harder.

Ribble has always been my go to source. I have to say that my last 2 orders have really sucked though. I had to wait 20 working days to email them that the package never arrived. The resent it and I had it a few days later. I ordered again from them on 09-27 and still do not have my order. Something is not right with them at this point. I will still use them but not on anything that I am even remotely in a hurry for.

I hope that you are right and I will follow this advice. I am skeptical though. Maybe it will work out though.

In the end, this is probably correct. I will let you know once I complete it, which will be a few days still because of a lack of time and the fact that Ribble is slow on my last order. I am waiting on my stem and pedals. I have a arse hatchet of a seat that I pulled off of my Giant mtb. The only seat that I have ever not been able to get comfortable on. I was going to use that but went with a Brooks B17 instead for this build. I just ordered that yesterday but that should complete my parts once they get here.
