When would you consider not showing up for a ride...

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

When would you consider not showing up for a ride...

Short of some grave injury (or death) I would like some serious input on when you would consider cancelling your ride? Taking into consideration that you know it's not an easy ride and you're in pain from the get go.

Cancelling "your" ride? Like as in you are leading a group? Or are you participating in a group training ride... what?

Hi Lopez,

I am new here, but I race from the mid 80's to the early 90's. I almost never miss a training ride. God know there are those few days I just didn't want to go, but I was never missed. If you know that you are going to get a beating from the "get go" then you need to find another group of riders that aren't going as fast so you can you can get out and hammer them and do some work in the front. You will get stronger, and be able to hang with the big boys. Don't be afraid of them. They just have more miles in and been riding longer then you have so they know how to ride. Remember, they are not special and are not better or stronger then you. The learning curve is usually about a year or two.

When you are riding with these animals that are drawing blood at training rides, you never burn yourself out by taking a big pull. Just do your turn, and get back in the pace line.

Sound like you are not in shape, or don't have a lot of experience in training rides. Keep going and you will do OK.

If you are leading a ride, is ok, they will do ok without you.

Good luck,

Jeff

Wouldn't riding with a faster group mean, you push yourself harder, than riding with a slower group, and staying in front. Thus you'd get stronger in the faster group.

Yes and no. If you go out with a few strong people then yes, because you are forced to work. Down side is that you know they will wait for you. In a large group like racing, they will not wait, if you can't keep up ,you will end up riding in the back eventually getting drop then sitting up cating your breath. god knows I have been there too many times. You need to be spinning not free wheeling. If you went with a slower group, you will (should)get up front and do some work. If you work hard up front in a slower group, the end result is far greater then playing catch-up with the big boys. Most begining riders do not get up front enough due to the fact that the pace is too fast for them and they get burn out. Getting up front does 2 things for you. One, your will become stronger. two, It does your head some good, you become stronger and not afraid of pulling. You must set a good constant pace up there, make you a smooth rider.

A GetGo is a convenience store / gas station here in my neck of the woods. And the pain might come from eating one of them frozen microwave burritto's they all seem to have

Think about not going on a ride... one thing... sleep.

(I.e. I am having second thoughts about the race this morning, just got to bed at 1 am and it is 4 am and I am heading for an hour drive to the local crit... oh well!)

No amount of pain, suffering, etc will keep me out of the saddle...

I missed a group ride this morning. It was scheduled for 8 AM, and was a nice LSD of about 70-80 miles. Unfortunately, I worked late last night and forgot to set my alarm. But for some reason, I wasn't all too disappointed when I woke up at 8:30 and realized that the guys in the ride were already off and moving.

I'm going solo today, I guess.

Jeff

While I'm no professional, I (under normal circumstances) can definitely keep up with my group. I commute to work and do about 140+ miles on the weekend BUT I've been trying out some new gym workouts and the Friday night workout has my muscles stiff and sore before we even started. Saturday ride (the mild one) turned out to be qmore challenging that usual and now it's Sunda which is - the hard ride - of the week.

Anyway I can stil walk so I'm off to give it a go, hopefully the muscles loosen up along the way.

"from the get go" means from the start to me, not sure if I'm using the phrase right though.

Pain was caused not by cycling but other workouts I've been experimenting with which have left my muscles sore and stiff. That being said I'm heading out in a few minutes so I guess I'll let you all know how it goes.
