Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Calling all Look 795 owners or bike price connoisseurs!

Guys... I am sad. I was at work and I just got an email about this bike that I forgot about and wanted to pull the trigger on. Auction just ended today, 1 fcking person took it with 1 bid.
It's a Look 795 with Dura Ace di2, light version. My local Look dealer has the exact same bike (minus the saddle) for ~$8k + tax. Granted, this bike on eBay is used, but well taken care of. Just my size, which is what matters.

I know the erm... look of the Look 795 may put some of you off, but this isn't a discussion that is meant to be about its aesthetics (because it's beautiful). So the real question is... should I stop being depressed that I missed out on what I think was an excellent deal on the super bike of my dreams? Can anyone comment on whether this was actual good deal or no, and why or why not?

It was a good deal. Two other similar bikes are for sale at a little over $4K.

But I wouldn't fret over it. I always like the idea of CL where you can see and try out what you're buying. Keep your eye out, be patient, and you'll find another deal as good.

It's difficult finding a Look bike on CL! The closest I found was a few weeks ago, someone was selling their 765 with mech Ultegra for $7k which is I think is quite laughable. I saw a 2012 695 sell on auction on eBay for a nice $2.2k with Ultegra 6800 and some carbon wheels back in early August. Not bad for a 695 I think.

By the way, if the bikes you are talking about are on eBay, only one of them that I have seen has comparable components and they're asking ~$6k.

Honestly, I am not sure if the number I have in mind is realistic. Of course I would like a good deal, but I don't mind paying a fair price for both parties so long as I don't get ripped off. I don't think what the bike sold for is a rip off, and as someone has already pointed out it was a good deal. Given that, since I was prepared to pay $4.4k with shipping for the bike in my original post, I'd say I'd pay $3k without wheels with the same electronic groupset.

You just put a $1.4K value on used wheels.

Coach has one. I don't think he is selling, but he always is selling something.

I think it would depend on the wheels of course. But yeah, I have bought plenty of frames in the past, but never any used wheels and I did say I wasn't sure if the value I had in mind was realistic!

What do you think a good price would be on a two year old used set of say... Zipp 404s?

+1 to the pool of people who think someone somewhere did get a pretty sweet deal. I agree though, I always seem to see something on eBay. I have been looking for the past 4 months, what's another few until something pops up, yeah?

I bought the older Zipp 404s tubular with Power Tap for $350 - rear only. I am not a Zipp fan.

Used wheels are tough. If true and never trued - how are you going to tell?
I tend to buy wheels new. Frames and parts I'd be happy to go used. But would you buy a used chain?

Anyway - if buddy has a set I know are true and not crashed or re-tuned - $1,100ish.

eBay Stock - $800ish - YMMV

A disk or tri-spoke - closer to retail.

Point taken. I was eyeing some 404s locally and they are asking $1,400 that seem to be in fairly good condition from the pictures, but as you say, in reality who knows about wheels' integrity. I was going to offer $1k and see were it went from there on.

Well, thanks for everyone's thoughts on my OP. If anyone has anything else to add, or a Look 795 they're willing to sell feel free to add on.

2 weeks ago during our Sunday "fast" ride, one guy had a 795. Cool looking bike, but maintenance must be a pain.

I've got one in my cache. How is maintenance a pain? It's still got all the same bits as any other bike. Yeah, some of the proprietary stuff is a bit funky for aftermarket sizing (stem, in particular) but from a maintenance perspective it uses all the same tools and parts that all my other bikes do in the garage.

I don't really understand why the angle of the top tube+stem+bars is so high. Why not level it out and keep the bike aggressive? The image in that listing has the tops of the hoods above the seat...

It's an adjustable stem.

I picked up a new 795 recently. A few months ago, they were blowing them out at outrageously low prices for that model. Another deal will come along, just be patient .
