Poll - Best time to start contemplating the next bike

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Poll - Best time to start contemplating the next bike

Thought I would start a vanity thread for once--it's kinda fun.

So when is the best time to start figuring out what your next ride will be?

I just got my Surly a month ago, just put money down on my Serotta this week and have it spec'd (in my head) and then I thought "What next..?". (I also got rid of my Cannondale and Lemond in the last two weeks)

I'd wager that 90% of Western civilization was built by ******s dreaming of the next object of their fancy and the one after that.

Poseo ergo sum.

(edit - I can't believe the system edited this comment. Rhymes with "bankers" but starts with "w.")

Good Thread. I'll bet (if everyone tells the truth) that the bike lust never really leaves. May fade for a moment but is always there. I read an article about Robin Williams a few years ago. Man has a special build garage just for his many bikes. I can't remember all of them but it was certainly lust city.

Different bikes for different purposes?

Eventually I want a touring bike with a triple , a folding bike and all out super stiff race machine with a DA7800 crankset and a 11-21 cassette for a short joy rides (maybe a 12-23 if Intend to ride longer in somewhat hilly areas)

It can't be good to be as rich as Robin Williams. He can just buy all the bikes he wants without dreaming and waiting. Dreaming and waiting is half of the fun, so he's missing out on a lot.

Anyway...I'm always contemplating a new bike, but that doesn't mean I will actually get the bike I'm dreaming of at the moment. I'm so poor that by the time I have enough money to buy that bike my mind will have already shifted to something new.

I'm always contemplating, but I only make serious decisions once I have the money and set a budget. Let your budget decide your bike and don't let a bike decide your budget, or bad things will happen. If I don't do that I'll end up in the poor house or the doghouse, or maybe both.

I recently bought a Bianchi Alloro frame that I 1) can't build up for lack of $, 2) have no urgent need for, and 3) doesn't fit. It's crazy!

I'm pretty much topped out right now frame wise. I might upgrade the group to Record someday, but I couldn't be more happy with the frame. So I am not looking for the next road bike, but I would like to get a nice hard tail now.

Dis? I'm so OCP it hurts. So there's no disrespect to the great engine of progress at all. Smith spotted the tremendous external benefits of capitalism and free choice a long time ago.

So work hard, play by the rules and don't mess with your neighbors. After that, what you do with you time and money (and your neighbors if they're up for it) to entertain yourself is 100% your business.

You left off the options

When you have the money in hand

When your wife/husband/sig. other says you can

Both apply to me

3. Ultralight carbon hardtail with XTR
