Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Lightweight Urgestaldt

Four strikes...YOU'RE OUT! I thought I'd share my horrible experience with Lightweight and their Urgestaldt frame. As I stated about, I gave up after 4 frames. The seat post slipped horribly on the first frame, the seat tube cracked on the second frame, the seat post slipped again on the third frame (even after me trying a thicker carbon past and gluing sand paper to the shim) and the bottom bracket was so out of spec on the fourth frame that the press in bottom bracket almost fell out! Instead of refunding my money (as requested), Lightweight sent ANOTHER frame (which I lost a lot of money on selling on eBay). I wish I had all the time, money and mileage back I've spent the last 3 years.

Lightweight is so overpriced that they probably still made a profit after sending you 4 frames.

You should have asked them to send you one without a "d" in it. Where'd you buy it, Canal Street?

Not terribly surprising. People that are unhappy with a transaction are far, far more likely to voice their opinion vs people that are happy.

Sounds vaguely like someone not using carbon paste and ignoring torque specs or something for 3 of the 4 complaints.

IIRC BikeRumor or maybe BikeRadar reviewed this frameset...and found they had to torque the post binder (with proper assembly paste) above rated spec to get it to stick.

And ofc there's the weight limit of 260lbs or so as well on the frameset.

People do that. They feel so aggrieved that they make an account on various forums to just bad mouth the company.

The OP has posted the same on the twospoke and weightweenies forums.

Chances are we will never hear from the OP again so I wouldn't waste my time trying to ask further questions of the OP.

Sometimes there are instant classics. This could be classified as an "instant zombie thread."

Bikes: Super Cheap gc3 approved Bike

I thought Lightweight was just for show. Sort of like, a Patek watch, you don't wear it, keep it in safety deposit box or in a glass box for show, you wear the Seiko presage for actual wear. I thought these were something to that, they were made to be built up, looked at, bike porn, after done with it, put it away somewhere safe. And then take out the CAAD 12 with AL rims and disc brakes, as that was meant to be ridden, and abused.

You'd think, but I see one (or a set of their wheels at least) nearly every weekend at some popular spot or other. Don't think I've ever seen one in a race, though.
I can understand not riding a Lightweight, because I don't think they're very attractive. But a Calatrava? I'd wear it constantly.

The magic of copy/paste means you get to repeat the same mistake multiple times. Just found another thread on roadcyclingUK. I wonder how many he will make before he feels satisfied?

They are prettier too on top of that. Trek Emonda, Canyon Ultimate, Giant TCR, Cannondale Evo, Ridley Helium, Argon 18 Gallium, hmmm, screw it, every lightbike from a major brand makes a better looking bike than Light Weight does.

For that much money, get a Calfee or a Parlee.

No thanks, Parlee are hideous, so are Calfee. The monocoque frames from the major brands are so much more svelte, aero, smooth, and well awesome. BMC Roadmachine, makes all other custom frames look like piss.

to these eyes, the signature dropped seatpost of BMC like that on their Roadmachine gives it as much visual appeal as a cargo van........

BMC was one of the first to design the dropped seatpost, creating the "aero bike" category. Now almost every major manufacturer has one in their line up - Cannondale and Bianchi are two such holdouts. A marketing bonanza for sure, to which I'm not immune - I'm pretty sure my next bike will be an aero bike, just because.

thanks for the support

Gosh, thanks for your support. What a bunch of smart asses. YES I did use carbon paste (two different types...Theirs and an even more aggressive one) plus had 2 different professional shops torque it to spec. Thought I'd merely share my experience but am unsubscibing from this stupid forum.

These kinds of problems never ceases to amaze me. One would think that high dollar bikes would be free from out of spec BB shells, slipping posts, creaking cranks, non aligned gear drops ... but no. Its far too common hearing about these kinds of problems that likely would all be solved by better designs, tighter manufacturing tolerances and better QC. All of witch should a given on high dollar items, but often isn't.
