Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Average power and normalized power

I see these as two metrics on my Garmin 1000. What is the difference between the two?

If you don't have a power meter it doesn't matter.

Check out GCN. They do a nice job of breaking it down.

In Excel, you'd calculate average power as avg(all your power data points from the ride).

Normalized power is similar but weights the points differently to approximate how much they "cost" your body. Bigger numbers are found here.

In general NP is a better metric. It's much harder to ride at 400w for 5' then coast for 5' then it is to ride at 200w for 10', even though the work over the duration (and thus AP) is the same.
